Libyan forces mount attack on southern Sirte (Reuters)

SIRTE, Libya (Reuters) ? Transitional Libyan government forces with heavy guns mounted on some 100 vehicles swept into Sirte on Saturday in one of the biggest assaults yet in the battle for Muammar Gaddafi's hometown, but had to seek cover when they drew withering fire from his diehard loyalists.

Fighters with the National Transitional Council (NTC) shouted "Allahu Akbar!" or "God is greatest!" as their pickup trucks set off. They pushed into a residential district on the southern side of the Mediterranean coastal city.

But they were forced to scramble for refuge under heavy fire from pro-Gaddafi fighters in an apartment complex, a Reuters reporter on the scene reported. Two NTC fighters were killed and three wounded in the exchanges.

"They're fighting us fiercely because, for sure, Mo'tassim is inside (Sirte)," said Abdulrazaq Haroun, one of the NTC commanders in the city. He was referring to one of Gaddafi's fugitive sons, who has been spotted in Sirte.

Taking Sirte would bring Libya's new rulers closer to their goal of establishing control of the entire country almost two months after they seized the capital Tripoli, but they are also under pressure to spare the civilians trapped inside.

The NTC forces have thrust Gaddafi loyalists back from defensive positions well outside Sirte, and are now contesting control of the center of the city in often-chaotic street-by-street battles.

The prolonged struggle to capture the few remaining bastions of pro-Gaddafi loyalists has sidetracked NTC efforts to set up effective government over the sprawling North African country and rebuild oil production vital to its economy.

Thousands of civilians have fled Sirte as fighting has intensified, describing increasingly desperate conditions for those inside the seafront city.

HOUSE COLLAPSED

More were leaving Sirte on Saturday. "We could not understand who was firing," said Milad Abdul Rahim, who was heading out of Sirte. "It is just random."

Hassan Massoud drove out of the city in a pick-up truck with his family in the cab and luggage teetering on the back. He said he decided to leave after his neighbor's house was hit.

"It was single-storey. It collapsed on them. It killed a man and a girl," he said.

Along with the interior desert town of Bani Walid, Sirte is one of the last redoubts of Gaddafi loyalists in the country he ruled alone for 42 years.

It presents a particular challenge for Libya's new rulers. A drawn-out battle with many civilian casualties will breed hostility that will make it very difficult for the NTC to unite the country once the fighting is over.

The senior U.N. official in Libya, Ian Martin, appealed to NTC fighters on Friday not to aggravate those tensions by exacting violent revenge against Gaddafi supporters in Sirte.

"We are expressing our concern that the situation ends in a way that lays the foundations for national reconciliation rather than exacerbates the problems that a new government will face," Martin told Reuters in an interview.

ANTI-SNIPER TACTICS

The start of Saturday's offensive was delayed by a sandstorm that engulfed Sirte, reducing visibility to about 200 meters (yards).

NTC fighters said that pro-Gaddafi forces controlled the Ouagadougou conference center -- where the deposed leader used to host Arab and African heads of state at sumptuous summits -- and the university and hospital.

They said they were using these buildings to direct sniper and mortar fire at the attacking NTC forces.

One anti-Gaddafi fighter said that instead of sending in men on foot to locate the snipers, they were now identifying their firing positions from a distance and blasting the buildings where they were hiding with heavy weapons.

"What made us tired is the snipers," said the fighter, Abdelsalam Al-Rishy. "We're now using RPGs (rocket-propelled grenades) to deal with the snipers."

NTC officials say they believe Muammar Gaddafi himself is not in Sirte but far to the south in the Sahara desert.

In his first sign of life in weeks, a Syrian-based television station this week broadcast an audio recording of Gaddafi calling on his supporters to rise up in their millions against the new government and their Western allies.

This is happening: The Stumble Force Android Wings Flugtag

Stumble Force Android Wings

There are a couple reasons why I don't go to Tampa very often. One is a restraing order thanks to a bad night in Ybor City. (Is there any other kind?) The other is there's some serious poop going on down there. Witness: The crazy bastards of "Stumble Force" and their crazy-ass "Android Wings" contraption. Yes, that's a 12-foot-high EVO with a pair of 15-foot wings. And, yes, it's going to take flight over Tampa Bay. Or, should Sir Isaac Newton's streak continue, take flight into Tampa Bay.

If you're not familiar with the Red Bull Flugtag events, picture these things: A large body of water. A ramp. A human-powered flying machine, and sufficiently disturbed humans to pilot them. OK, not so much pilot, but hold on for dear life. Hell, watch the highlights from 2008, the last time the Flugtag was in Tampa. That ain't right. But it sure is fun to watch.

Anyhoo. Stumble Force and the aluminum-and-PVC Android Wings will be doing their thing today. We wish those crazy SOBs the best of luck.

A Subconsciously Complex World | Oval Egg Articles

This write-up sheds some daylight on "A Subconsciously Complex World". Not scores of public recognize about "NLP Hypnosis" subject matter since media has not bothered and people associated with this issue have not been vocal enough. However that's changing at present, more people are coming to be aware in relation to NLP Hypnosis because of spread of media outlets. It is highly suggested that you take your time reading through this write-up instead of speed reading it, which might lead to several missed points.

There is a clich? that goes as ?to see is to believe?, which is much true in this world where most people are visually inclined and proofs of existence is vital to live. Having faith into something that?s unseen is often questionable by society. So would you believe someone if he tells you that you can change your life by listening to a message that you can?t even hear?

What Message? Louder Please!

Subliminal messages are messages that are embedded into another media for it to be conveyed. Such subliminals are said to be able to affect your behavior or actions. It is said that it can induce you to do something, depending what the message tells you and not knowing you are being influenced by the message.

These messages can come in the form of music where the subliminal message can be embedded in your favorite band?s CD or with in your favorite song. The trick is, that you can?t hear the subliminal message but instead, you only hear your favorite song. Thus, you won?t even know if you are being influenced.

Today?s Trends

With high technology just a stone throw?s away, self-helping subliminals are distributed much easily through different medias like audio or videos. It can be ordered through the Internet and with just one click from your mouse with payments settled, you get what you ordered for in an instant. The question however is does it really work?

Two Sides of The Coin

There are two schools of thoughts regarding those self-helping subliminal messages. First are the people who say that subliminals really work, while the other say that?s it?s just simply a product of your imagination. Before purchasing a product like this, it is important for you to know both sides before you decide.

Go For It!

There are a lot of studies claiming that subliminal messaging is highly effective. There was one incidence in a movie house that a subliminal message was flashed in the screen telling the people to drink coke and eat popcorn, the results were actually astounding since the sales of coke and popcorn that night went sky high.

Of course those in the business in subliminal messaging would advertise their products the best that they can. Thus, there are a lot of testimonials of those said satisfied customers in the websites of those companies selling these products. However, it is subjective on whether you are going to believe them or not.

It?s Just Your Imagination

There are people on the other hand that say, since you?re the one that bought your own customized subliminal product, you already know what message you put in it. It can be a product of your imagination, or a psychological conditioning, that you do a certain action when you listen to that message.

An example is you bought a message that would help you stop smoking. Because you set your mind that what you bought is actually effective, your cravings for smoking is lessened because you tell your self that you?re under the spell of a subliminal message and that you don?t want to smoke. It?s like it?s all in the mind since you know what behavior you are being conditioned to.

In the end, the decision is still yours on whether you would opt to use subliminal messaging or not. Just remember that there?s no greater motivator than believing in you.

Copyright, Patent and Trademark for Dummies: An Easy Explanation on the Importance of Trademarks, Copyright, and Patents

Today, many people tend to be confused on what copyright, patent and trademark is all about. Many people tend to neglect the importance of these things. First of all, when you start your own business, you should have a trademark for your business. A trademark is a kind of symbol or logo that you put in your products to distinguish it from other products made by other companies. For example, if you are in the apparel business, you should have a unique trademark for your clothes, shoes and pants. By having your own trademark, you can be sure that your clients will know what they are buying.

If you made a new building design, or if you composed a song or poet, you have to copyright it in order to prevent it from being used without your permission. By copyrighting your songs, your architectural designs, or your documents, you can be sure that it will make it illegal to be used by other people without your permission. It is important that you should copyright your documents in order to prevent others from profiting from it. For example, if you composed a new song and were a hit with the public and you didn?t copyright it, you will see that someone else will claim that they wrote the song and will prevent you from using the song without their permission.

The same thing goes in patenting an invention. By patenting a particular invention, you can make sure that you will have absolute right for it and claim it as yours where no one will be authorized to copy it. Patenting, copyrighting and trademarks are all in the intellectual property law. You have to consider that this law is made to provide protection on intellectual property and is a special branch of the law that requires a special kind of lawyer.

Trademark registration, patenting, and copyrighting are all handled by the United States Patent and Trademark Office or PTO. The PTO is responsible for patenting all kinds of inventions and they are also responsible for registering trademarks and copyrighting. If you recently invented a new kind of gadget which is original and fully functional on its purpose, you can apply for a patent. By patenting your invention, you can be sure that no one else will be able to claim the invention as theirs. However, you have to consider that patenting an invention will take a lot of time and will cost a lot of money. This is why you should be financially prepared for it. You should also consider the fact that you will need a patent and trademark lawyer for it to represent you during the entire process of patenting your invention.

You have to consider that the patenting process is a complex process which deals with the intellectual property law. You will also need a lot of requirements for it, such as a prototype of your invention that you need to demonstrate with the PTO. The PTO will determine whether it can be approved or rejected of patenting.

In the trademark registration process, you have to present your trademark symbol to the PTO. Although the process for trademark registration is shorter than patenting an invention, you have to consider that it will also take some time. You will need to present a minimum requirement, such as a trademark design and your business registration. Once you have the minimum requirements needed to file for trademark registration, the next step is by letting a PTO lawyer examine the trademark and determine whether it bears a resemblance with other kinds of trademarks that is already registered.

There are specific grounds for approval and refusal of trademark where the PTO lawyer will base their decisions. If your trademark symbol contains a lot of similarities with other trademark symbol that is already registered, it will usually be refused.

These are the basics in patent, copyright and trademarks. As you can see, it is very important to get your inventions, your architectural designs and trademark logo registered with the PTO to protect it from being used without your permission or get it stolen and be claimed by other people.

So, the next time you successfully invented something or you have a new business trademark symbol, or if you wrote a new song or designed a new building, get it patented, copyrighted or registered in the PTO immediately.

Character actor Charles Napier dies at 75 (AP)

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. ? His granite jaw, toothy grin and steely stare were the tools that made Charles Napier one of the most recognizable actors movie and TV audiences never heard of.

From the dim-witted country music star John Belushi flimflammed in "The Blues Brother" movie to the scheming military intelligence officer who matched wits with Sylvester Stallone in "Rambo: First Blood II," Napier appeared in scores of films and TV shows in a career spanning more than 40 years.

He died Wednesday at age 75 at Bakersfield Memorial Hospital, his longtime friend Dennis Wilson told the Bakersfield Californian. The cause of death was not given.

The actor, whose earliest roles included a memorable turn as a hippie wanderer searching for paradise in a classic 1960s "Star Trek" episode, continued to work until shortly before his death. He had a voice role in the animated series "Archer" earlier this year.

In recent years he was a sheriff in an episode of "Monk," a father on "Curb Your Enthusiasm" and a security guard on the children's show "Ned's Declassified School Survival Guide." His voice was also heard on several episodes of "The Simpsons" as Officer Krackney and other characters.

His favorite role was as the judge in "Philadelphia," the 1993 film that won Tom Hanks a best actor Oscar as an attorney stricken with HIV.

His stock in trade, however, was playing steely eyed tough guys in films like "The Silence of the Lambs" and even comedies like "The Blues Brothers," in which he famously threatened to knock out Belushi's teeth for asking to see his musician's union card.

"I always felt I played myself or some kind of version of myself," Napier told the Bakersfield Californian earlier this year. "If you think about it, old actors probably don't even have a self."

Born in the small town of Mt. Union, Ky., on April 12, 1936, Napier was a high school basketball star before enlisting in the Army in 1954.

After earning a degree in art from Western Kentucky University, he worked at various jobs, including art teacher and basketball coach. (He had minored in physical education.)

It was in graduate school at Western Kentucky in 1964 that he decided to try his hand at theater. He appeared in several local plays, including Shakespeare's "Othello."

He eventually moved to Los Angeles, where he landed a small role on an episode of "Mission Impossible" in 1967.

He eventually began appearing regularly in TV shows, including "Hogan's Heroes," "The Rockford Files," "Baretta," "The A-Team," "Kojak," "Murder, She Wrote" and numerous others.

He also made several films for schlock director Russ Meyer, including "Beyond the Valley of the Dolls," "Supervixens" and "Cherry, Harry and Raquel." He said the latter provided him his most embarrassing Hollywood moment, when Meyer had him run toward the cameras wearing nothing but a hat and boots.

Napier settled in the Bakersfield area in the mid-1980s, saying he was captivated by the western Sierra mountain range after getting lost on the way home from filming a TV commercial.

Survivors include sons Whit and Hunter and a daughter, Meghan.

West Virginia Gives Hope to Obama as History Repeats Itself (ContributorNetwork)

ANALYSIS | Imagine a state election the year before a Democratic presidential reelection bid. The state's elections had been dominated by Democrats for years. A wealthy Republican businessman runs against the Democratic political heir apparent to the governor's mansion on the heels of a messy spat between a new GOP Congress and a Democratic president amid a shaky recovery from a recession. Does it sound familiar?

It sounds like Obama in 2011, as he anxiously watches the election returns from West Virginia as Democratic Party acting Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin seeks a full term against Republican businessman Bill Maloney. Or it could be Bill Clinton in 1995, as he nervously watches the election returns from Kentucky as Democratic Party Lt. Gov. Paul Patton seeks a win against Republican businessman Larry Forgy.

In 1995, Democrats had been winning every gubernatorial contest in the state since Louie Nunn from 1967-1971. But the Republican Revolution of 1994 and government shutdowns threw the Patton-Forgy race into doubt. National money poured into the Forgy campaign as the Republican focused on national issues, but Patton held on to win a narrow election by 2.2 percentage points by keeping it local.

The next day, a fellow graduate student from our program who was a Republican supporter dismissed the results to me. "It doesn't mean anything?Democrats always win these things. It doesn't mean Clinton will win in 1996." Well, not only did Clinton win his reelection, but he also captured Kentucky by a similarly narrow margin, in a state that was no stranger to Newt Gingrich's revolution, and anti-Clinton attack ads in 1994.

If you fast forward to 2011, you can see history repeating itself. According to Reuters, acting Gov. Tomblin pulled off a narrow victory by three points against Maloney. GOP supporters will be quick to dismiss the results (Fox News set up a broadcast from Maloney's HQ, but has now moved on to the 2012 GOP primary and Eric Holder), but they shouldn't. Like Forgy, Maloney unsuccessfully tried to tie the Democratic president to the Democratic candidate with an attack strategy that just turned off voters.

This doesn't mean that Obama is likely to win West Virginia in 2012. Gallup polls show that Obama's third lowest approval ratings can be found in West Virginia (33.4 [ercemt). So Tomblin won reelection in spite of the president's low numbers, as Patton did in 1995 in Kentucky.

Speaking of Kentucky, state Gov. Stephen Beshear is running for reelection. This time Republicans have a more politically experienced candidate in David Williams and a basketball star in Richie Farmer as his running mate. Obama remains unpopular in Kentucky (it is his seventh least popular state, as only 38.6 percent of Kentuckians approve his job). But attempts to "nationalize" the race haven't helped the Republicans any more than they did in the state in 1995 or in nearby West Virginia in 2011. I expect the Bluegrass State's gubernatorial election to tighten, but attempts to take negative shots at President Obama in these states don't seem to be a winning strategy, as it may have worked the previous year.

Just because the president isn't too popular in these states doesn't mean voters want a campaign that puts Obama in the crosshairs. They would prefer more information about what Republicans might actually do if elected. Obama may not win either state in 2012, but the GOP's losses in winnable races don't bode well for next year for them.
