Android Apps Coming to BlackBerry, MeeGo Smartphones (ContributorNetwork)

It's no secret that RIM's been working on an Android "App Player" for its BlackBerry PlayBook tablet. A beta of the App Player was actually leaked to the Internet not too long ago, although getting the Player to work was a hassle since it wasn't quite ready to use yet.

New reports now suggest that Android apps may be coming to BlackBerry smartphones as well ... along with smartphones powered by MeeGo, Bada, WebOS, and Windows.

Let's start with the BlackBerry App Player

Why? Because it's the highest-profile attempt to bring Android apps to other platforms, and the only one that has a major company's backing.

RIM said that it'd be available sometime in the summer. But since fall just started on the 23rd, Engadget's "reliable source" -- which said that the App Player won't be available until late fall -- seems much more reliable now.

One can hope that once it's released, installing an Android app will be a slightly less involved procedure than Lucas Atkins of N4BB previewed, and won't require you to install the Android SDK or put your PlayBook into developer mode. Even at its best, though, it'll have some big limitations: It'll only work with Android 2.3 smartphone apps, and it won't give you access to the Android Market. Unless it lets you install downloaded apps from other stores, Android app developers may well have to bring the apps to BlackBerry themselves.

Coming to BlackBerry smartphones?

Why not? That's the rumor, anyway, and it seems technically sound since the PlayBook's QNX operating system will power the next generation of BlackBerry smartphones. One imagines that Android smartphone apps will look somewhat more at home on a BlackBerry smartphone's screen than a BlackBerry tablet's.

What about other platforms?

That's the promise of OpenMobile's Application Compatibility Layer, which already has a demo video up on YouTube. Its claims border on the hyperbolic; OpenMobile says it runs "every single Android app -- no exceptions", and that it has "full speed 3D graphics". It claims support for a bevy of mobile OSes, including MeeGo, Bada, WebOS and Windows.

The downsides? First, it appears to be aimed at device manufacturers; the marketing copy talks about how it "opens up the market for your device". And second, it doesn't actually open up the market, if by that you mean the Android Market. As they discuss in the comment threads, you have to use a non-Google app market, one that'll actually work with your phone.

Why all the limitations?

A better question might be, how come this works at all?

The reason is because Android's programming code is open-source, which means people can legally reverse-engineer it. Only the code for the "Gingerbread" smartphone version of Android is, though; the "Honeycomb" tablet version's still under wraps. And the Android Market is proprietary to Google-approved smartphones, so the odds are slim to none that BlackBerry will ever see it.

Will BlackBerry (and other phone) owners ever see Android apps? The quickest way is still to switch to Android ...

Spooky theory, leukemia drugs top Nobel tips: Thomson Reuters

LONDON | Wed Sep 21, 2011 7:21am EDT

LONDON (Reuters) - Researchers who developed ground-breaking leukemia drugs, discovered dendrimers and delved into the intricacies of what Einstein dubbed "spooky action" are among Thomson Reuters 2011 top tips to win Nobel prizes for science.

Nobel prediction expert David Pendlebury's annual forecast is made using the company's "Web of Knowledge" data on how often a scientist's published papers are used and cited as a basis for further investigation by other researchers.

"In the scientific community, citations ... can serve as another form of peer review," said Pendlebury, a citation analyst at Thomson Reuters research services.

"The more cited a scientist is, the more well-respected the author tends to be amongst his or her peers, which can be a predictor of awards like the Nobel prize."

Winners of the 2011 Nobels are due to be announced in early October and at least one of the picks from Pendlebury's prediction list has won every year. He makes predictions for the four science prizes, not for Peace and Literature.

Among Thomson Reuters favorites for the Medicine prize are three scientists from the United States -- Brian Druker, Nicholas Lydon and Charles Sawyers -- who discovered and developed ground-breaking new drugs called imatinib and dasatinib for the treatment of chronic myeloid leukemia (CML).

So-called tyrosine kinase inhibitor drugs such as imatinib, marketed by Swiss drugmaker Novartis as Glivec or Gleevec, and dasatinib, sold by Bristol-Myers Squibb as Sprycel, have transformed treatment of CML and are credited with turning it from a fatal cancer into a manageable condition.

"This was a fundamental discovery in medicine ... with a fantastic result which is often referred to in terms like 'magic bullet'," said Pendlebury. "It has really given a new paradigm for the treatment of cancer."

He noted that Druker, Lydon and Sawyers won the 2009 Lasker award, widely considered a good predictor of Nobel winners, for their work. "It seems to me that all things are in alignment for a Nobel prize for this discovery."

WILL THE NOBELS SPOOK EINSTEIN?

Also on Pendlebury's Medicine list are Robert Langer and Joseph Vacanti, who pioneered work in regenerative medicine and who in 2005 founded the company InVivo Therapeutics to develop stem cell treatments for people with spinal cord injuries.

For Chemistry, Pendlebury points to Jean Frechet and Donald Tomalia, who discovered dendrimers -- a class of tiny synthetic compounds that can be designed for use in medicine, electronics and materials industries -- and to Martin Karplus for pioneering simulations of the molecular dynamics of biomolecules.

Nobels often go to groups of three researchers, so French scientist Alain Aspect, American John Clauser and Austrian Anton Zeilinger may be in with a chance of the Physics prize for their work on quantum entanglement, a notion that an exasperated Albert Einstein once described as "spooky action at a distance."

Quantum entanglement involves the theory that particles can be connected in such a way that changing the state of one instantly affects the other, even when they are miles apart.

Entanglement plays an important role in the development of super-fast quantum computers, which scientists believe could outperform conventional computers by being able to test many possible solutions to a problem at once.

Aspect, Clauser and Zeilinger confirmed the entanglement phenomenon in a series of sophisticated experiments during the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s, and in 2010 won the Wolf Prize in Physics for their work.

"While a full description of the kind that Einstein wanted is still not in anybody's pocket, these experiments have been fundamental in physics in the 20th century," said Pendlebury.

"They have confirmed spookiness at a distance. And I think Einstein would continue to be annoyed that there is not a better explanation for how this occurs."

Review Fujitsu Lifebook LH531 | Audio Visual Junkie

Fujitsu Lifebook LH531 review

The Fujitsu Lifebook LH531 is my latest baby. I purchased it earlier this month as a replacement for my aging desktop computer. I purchased it at a computer shop in SM Mall of Asia. I had the memory upgraded from 2GB to 4GB bringing the total cost close to thirty thousand Philippine pesos. It came with an Intel Core i5 processor, an Intel HD 3000 graphics card, and a 500GB hard disk drive.

Mobile computing: past vs present

Five years ago I would never have considered purchasing a laptop computer. However, rapid progress in mobile communications and decline in the price of quality machines has made laptop computers an attractive investment. Computing power has advanced in such a way that it is no longer necessary to have the latest and greatest machine in order to run most day-to-day applications.

There I was, all set to purchase a new laptop computer. The only question was: which one?

One factor to rule them all

As a consumer, the single most important factor for me was value for money. I wanted something that meets my needs at a price that wouldn?t break my wallet.

The Fujitsu Lifebook LH531 is very competitively priced. At less than 30 thousand pesos, it is among the cheapest Core i5 notebook computers in the market. I could have gotten myself a faster machine for the same price, but that would mean resorting to brands that are not too well known. For a purchase at this amount I wanted a reliable brand with well established customer support. Fujitsu has been around long enough to build a solid reputation.

So, it was within my budget. But will I be getting value for it?

Elegant simplicity

I will be carrying this around, so I wanted something that looks good. The matte black plain finish in the LH531 is accentuated by an elegant chrome frame. There are red and pink versions, but I wanted something inconspicuous so the matte black one works well for me.

For its size the LH531 is surprisingly light at 2.1 kilograms. The battery lasts up 6.5 hours and can easily be removed, which makes it even lighter. If I wanted to go lighter I will need to get a netbook, which lacks the computing power that I need.

Built for speed and power

Speaking of computing power, this baby is fast! My heaviest use includes running applications like Microsoft Word, Google Chrome, Firefox, Adobe Lightroom, Adobe Photoshop, and Adobe Illustrator simultaneously. This did not even come close to utilizing half of the Core i5?s potential.

The few 3D games that I tried ran smoothly. I will not expect it to run the latest and greatest 3D games at the highest graphical settings, but the Intel 3000 HD graphics card is no slouch in delivering crisp, smooth graphics.

Superb display

I like to watch movies and television series on my laptop, so I appreciate the LED display on the Lifebook LH531. It runs at a resolution of 1366 x 768 pixels. While this may not be true HD, I find that most of the stuff that I watch on my laptop are do not go beyond it anyway. I am perfectly content with watching 720p (1280 x 720 pixels) videos on my computer screen, since I?m sitting pretty close to it anyway. If I wanted to watch 1080p Blu-ray movies I would do it on the television.

Bells and whistles that count

One issue that I have with keyboards is food spillage. I like to eat while using the computer. The spill resistant keyboard supposedly handles this well. I have taken extra care not to spill stuff on it, but should the time come I am confident that it will be easy to clean. The chiclet type keyboard is soft and easy to touch. The keyboard layout is slightly different from what I am used to, but I was able to adjust to it with relative ease.

The LH531 comes with four USB 2.0 ports which I absolutely love as it makes copying huge files a breeze. One of the ports is used only for charging, which is a nice touch. I use it a lot when charging my phone and iPod. The headset and microphone port is placed in front. I would have preferred if it were placed on the side. It also comes with a Kensington lock slot, which for me is very important in securing a mobile device such as this.

Final thoughts

The Fujitsu Lifebook LH531 delivers value through its powerful processor, crisp graphical display, and sleek mobile design that comes with all the necessities of a modern mobile computing machine.

Silicon Valley Vets Aim to Bring Personal Financial ... - AllThingsD

Even though this Silicon Valley company?s dress code requires men to wear a shirt and tie to work (no jacket), the vibe is inherently high-tech.

Personal Capital?s CEO, Bill Harris, who headed up Intuit and PayPal previously, is unveiling his latest company today, which melds technology with financial advisory services.

He says the goal is to bring the decades-old business of managing money to the masses, by replacing fancy offices and golf club memberships with software and video chatting.

?I think we are going to see a radical deconstruction of financial services over the next decade that may be similar to what?s happened to the media or GM,? he said. ?It doesn?t mean they will go away, but they will look astonishingly different. That spells tremendous opportunity. It?s really difficult to take a large company with established ways of doing business and change.?

On the surface, it doesn?t look like Personal Capital would have a chance against Merrill Lynch, Charles Schwab, Fidelity or Edward Jones.

It has zero clients, 40 employees, zero branches, $27 million in capital and obviously a long, long way to go. Harris admits: ?I bet Wells Fargo or Schwab has 1,000 engineers for QA (quality assurance) alone,? but he counters, ?We are better off than they are because we can move quickly.?

In a demonstration, Harris walked me through the site, where you can log in to all of your various bank accounts and brokerage accounts.

By doing so, Personal Capital will be able to see everything in one snapshot, so it can tell you that you are invested 79 percent in U.S. stocks, or if you have too much cash. You can even drill down to see how much money you spend at Amazon on a monthly basis, or on a category like groceries.

All of these tools are free, but users will have to pay for the advice ? if they should want it.

Harris said the tools show you what you have, but the advice will tell you what to do if you are over-invested in U.S. stocks, or in a particular company.

?Most people have no idea and it?s the most important financial decision that you have to make,? he said.

The advisers will also help you eliminate fees that you are currently paying for mutual funds and come up with a long-term plan.

Personal Capital charges less than 1 percent of all the assets it is managing a year, which is below other brick-and-mortar businesses, he says. Additionally, the sales people don?t work on commission, so their interests are aligned with the client.

?I?m 55, and in some ways this is the culmination of my career,? Harris said. ?I?ve done so much in financial technology over the past 20 years. ? All of it has been pieces of the puzzle.?

Personal Capital is not the only one in Silicon Valley going after Wall Street.

Harris is also an adviser to Wikinvest and PageOnce.

PageOnce is building mobile applications to help people track their bills. Similar to Personal Invest, Wikinvest is building software to help users manage assets across multiple accounts. But instead of using advisers to make?recommendations, it will eventually provide tips using algorithms to decide what is cheaper or more lucrative based on your holdings.

?I would argue that nowhere near enough is being done,? Harris said. ?If you look at finance overall, it?s a huge and vital part of the American and global economy, and finance is one of the largest industries in the world. It?s up there with housing and autos and medicine. But when I think of all the industries where the Internet, or connectivity or mobile, has changed everything, it could be even more transformed.?

It?s easy to get Harris up on his soap box, but Michael Sha, the CEO of Wikinvest, will join him.

Sha says the irony in the industry is that the more you pay for financial services, the lower your return.?Still, it?s not the aim of Wikinvest to replace the big brokerage houses. Its users will need them to make a trade.

Here?s a video of Harris, wearing a jacket and displaying the polish of Wall St.:

GOP rep: Appoint special counsel in Solyndra loan (AP)

WASHINGTON ? The chairman of the House Judiciary Committee on Monday called for an independent investigator to look into a $528 million loan approved by the Obama administration for a now-bankrupt solar energy company.

Rep. Lamar Smith, R-Texas, said an outside lawyer is needed to determine "whether politics played a role" in the Energy Department loan for California-based Solyndra Inc., which declared bankruptcy this month and laid off its 1,100 workers.

"An independent examiner will uncover the truth about whether politics played a role in influencing the Obama administration to favor Solyndra over more financially stable loan applicants and thus ensure the integrity of the bankruptcy process for all creditors," Smith wrote in a three-page letter to Attorney General Eric Holder.

The FBI and the Energy Department's inspector general are already investigating the Solyndra loan, which has become a flashpoint in a partisan debate over subsidies for so-called green jobs.

The Fremont, Calif.-based company was the first renewable-energy company to receive a loan guarantee under a stimulus-law program to encourage green energy and was frequently touted by the Obama administration as a model. President Barack Obama visited the company's Silicon Valley headquarters last year, and Vice President Joe Biden spoke by satellite at its groundbreaking.

Since then, the company's implosion and revelations that the administration hurried Office of Management and Budget officials to finish their review of the loan in time for the September 2009 groundbreaking has become an embarrassment for Obama as he sells his new job-creation program around the country.

An Associated Press review of regulatory filings shows that Solyndra was hemorrhaging hundreds of millions of dollars for years before the Energy Department signed off on the original $535 million loan guarantee in September 2009. The company eventually got $528 million.

Republicans also question a decision in February to restructure the loan in such a way that private investors, including an Obama fundraiser, moved ahead of taxpayers for repayment in case of a default.

Administration officials say the restructuring was necessary. Without an infusion of cash, Solyndra would likely have faced immediate bankruptcy, they said.

Given the company's shaky financial condition, Smith and other Republicans say the decision to restructure the loan raises questions about whether the administration protected political supporters at taxpayers' expense.

A spokeswoman said the Justice Department had received the letter and was reviewing it.
