Report: Gameloft Closes India Studio, Sacks 250+

Gameloft Logo

Gameloft this week reportedly shut down its India studio and laid off more than 250 game developers without notice.

Employees at the Hyderabad studio known as Gameloft India, one of 28 studios operated by Gameloft around the world, were "told to pack up and go home" on Tuesday afternoon following an all-hands meeting, Gamasutra reported. Earlier that same day, the company, which employs more than 5,000 people worldwide, reported 27 percent sales growth for its fiscal 2012.

Gameloft, headquartered in San Francisco but traded on Europe's Euronext exchange, mainly develops "pocket game" titles based on popular existing games like Assassin's Creed for Apple's iOS devices, but also creates games for Android and other mobile platforms, as well as for consoles, handhelds, and the Mac platform.

Asked about the Gamasutra report, a Gameloft spokesperson did not confirm or deny it but told PCMag that the company would "officially not be providing any comment at this time."

Gamasutra also reported allegations from unnamed sources with regards to the allegedly "fishy, shady" way in which the Hyderabad studio employees were let go.

"According to one source, employees were asked to sign two letters before leaving: a form saying they were leaving for personal reasons rather than being laid off (pre-dated from yesterday, January 28th) and an acceptance of resignation from Gameloft dated Tuesday the 29th. That source tells us that he and others have not signed the letters yet, describing them as 'fishy,'" the gaming site reported.

In 2011, a former head programmer at Gameloft's Auckland, New Zealand studio alleged that employees at Gameloft New Zealand were required to work 120-hour weeks and given false deadlines on projects to "make employees work faster and harder."

Kristofferson salutes Nelson with new award

(AP) ? Willie Nelson and Kris Kristofferson don't get together as much as they'd like. When they do, something amazing usually happens.

This time Kristofferson awarded Nelson with the first Kris Kristofferson Award, the Nashville Songwriters Association International's new lifetime achievement award. Then the two played together Sunday night at The Bluebird Cafe.

"I really thought I was there giving you an award," Nelson joked with Kristofferson afterward during an interview on Nelson's bus. "I had a great speech. Next time."

The pair teamed on hits like "Crazy" and "Sunday Mornin' Comin' Down" as Jamey Johnson looked on from a corner and producer Fred Foster watched from a stage-side table during an invitation-only gathering at the venue known as a songwriter's showcase.

The 76-year-old Kristofferson joked he was embarrassed the NSAI named the award after him. He's a founding member of the songwriter's organization and like the 79-year-old Nelson a member of its hall of fame.

"If I had seen what's happening right now before right now I would've thought I was dreaming because when I came to Nashville, Nashville was the most exciting place for a creative artist to be," Kristofferson told the crowd. "And the people I hung around with were serious songwriters who were totally unselfish, and their hero and my hero was a guy that nobody else knew. It was Willie Nelson. He's unlike anybody else."

Why You Should Never Skip Flossing Your Teeth

Why You Should Never Skip Flossing Your TeethIn my mid-twenties I decided, after about 5 years of putting it off, that it was time for a dental check up. And even though it had been so long since I had been sitting in that uncomfortable room, I was told that my teeth were near perfect. The thing about these moments?where you think you're "special"?is that they can go to your head.

For example, on my first visit to a horse race I won $270. I thought I was ?special' in the way that I knew how to pick winning horses. I wasn't; every cent of that $270 was lost when I went back the following week.

But I digress. This is about teeth?no wait, it's about more than that; this is about habit and remembering. After all, a habit is simply remembering to do something based on a thought or experience.

Just recently I decided that I would give myself another dental check up. I seemed to have forgotten my horse racing lesson because I was expecting to have perfect teeth, again. I didn't. I was given a bill that would be the equivalent of buying a decent used car. Ugh. Could I have prevented this? Yes, I could have. If only I had been flossing my teeth two times a day, I would have had less problems.

I'll admit, my teeth are in very good condition when I compare them to other peoples' teeth. But that doesn't mean that they will always be that way, right? Just because you are in a position where you are "ahead," it doesn't mean that it will always be that way. Similar to how numero uno has only one way to travel?downwards, number two has options?forward or back. Perhaps that is why some people never try to be the best; people might subconsciously like the option of being number one, but don't want to be in the position to have to defend it. Or maybe, being number one or the best makes you lazy.

Not flossing my teeth twice a day was, I admit, due to laziness. I thought I was okay, everything would be okay, and nothing wrong would ever happen. There is a lesson in all of this; and it will vary from individual to individual, but the overarching take away is this: floss your teeth. Defend your status. As you acquire more, or you are born with more, you are that way because others before you helped. It takes responsibility, and work, to maintain or grow. Some people might think that the way to keeping your teeth looking good is to knock out everyone elses' teeth, or take away their dental insurance so their teeth go bad.

That is not the way to go. Floss your teeth two times a day. Your dentist and your gums will thank you.

(AP) ? Prince Harry's off-duty time in Afghanistan appeared to be full of war movies, board games and elaborate candy trades.

The 28-year-old helicopter pilot and fellow members of his squad swapped Kit Kats and Rice Krispies Squares for American soldiers' M&Ms, according to a British media pool report released Sunday.

Harry himself outlined one of his less-prestigious duties. The third-in-line to the U.K. throne said anyone who lost at Uckers ? a military game similar to Ludo or Parcheesi ? had to then wait on his comrades like a Buckingham Palace butler, ready with a fresh cup of tea whenever anyone rang their bell.

"Whoever loses ... then you have to make brews for everybody all day," Harry told journalists ahead of his return to Britain this week.

He also denied rumors that he was far better at PlayStation than at traditional board games.

"I don't know who told you that," he told reporters. "I lost two days ago, and yesterday, so since you guys have been here I've only lost."

Harry returned to Britain on Wednesday after a 20-week deployment in Afghanistan in which he acknowledged that he had targeted Taliban fighters from the cockpit of his Apache attack helicopter.

Asked in an earlier round of interviews whether he had killed anyone, Harry said: "Yeah, so, lots of people have." That admission disturbed some Britons and led to front-page headlines like the one in The Daily Mail that read: "Harry: I Have Killed."

This latest round of interviews, focusing on Harry's daily life at Britain's Camp Bastion military base in Afghanistan, is not likely to draw the same kind of headlines.

The report mainly carried glimpses of the prince's daily routine, including his favorite foods ? chicken and broccoli ? and his favorite movies ? "Full Metal Jacket," ''Apocalypse Now," and "Platoon."

In an interesting twist for an Apache pilot, "Black Hawk Down," the Ridley Scott film about a helicopter raid gone wrong in Somalia, was among the movies spotted in Harry's communal tent.

Director Abrams to helm new Star Wars, fans say force with him

(Reuters) - Sci-fi filmmaker J.J. Abrams will direct "Star Wars: Episode VII," Walt Disney Co said after days of speculation, giving hope to many long-suffering fans who were disappointed by the last three installments in the iconic franchise.

The announcement was greeted with celebrations on online networks by the films' army of enthusiasts who have already watched Abrams rescue the aging "Star Trek" series with a high-grossing prequel in 2009.

Disney said late on Friday Abrams would work under the leadership of producer Kathleen Kennedy, the former president of Lucasfilm, and the script would be penned by Oscar-winning writer Michael Arndt.

"J.J. is the perfect director to helm this. Beyond having such great instincts as a filmmaker, he has an intuitive understanding of this franchise," Kennedy said in a statement on starwars.com.

Fans were equally enthusiastic. "JJ Abrams to the rescue!!! Yes!! #starwarsVII," wrote Jonny Radtke ?(@JonnyRadtke) on Twitter.

"Great news about JJ Abrams directing Star Wars. Might just rescue the brand...," added Alastair Brookshaw ?(@albrookshaw).

Rumors that Abrams, one of Hollywood's most successful directors and producers, would take stewardship of the films filled industry publications and online forums over the past week.

The 46-year-old made his name with TV shows "Alias" and "Lost" and earned his stripes as a director of effects-laden blockbusters with "Super 8," "Mission: Impossible III" and another widely expected Star Trek film "Star Trek Into Darkness," due out later this year.

The Star Wars franchise, which was created by George Lucas' Lucasfilms Ltd, has grossed more than $4.4 billion at the global box office since the first film was released in 1977, making it the third most successful movie property after the "Harry Potter" and "James Bond" series.

Star Wars characters such as Princess Leia, Luke Skywalker and the anti-hero, Darth Vader, have become a staple part of pop culture, along with the catch phrase "May the force be with you".

The Star Wars films were acquired by Disney after they bought Lucasfilm for $4.05 billion in October 2012. They announced then that three new installments would be made, starting in 2015.

Lucas, 68, gave Abrams his blessing on Starwars.com, saying the director was "an ideal choice to direct the new Star Wars film and the legacy couldn't be in better hands".

Abrams said his new role was "an absolute honor."

Disney had previously said Lucas would remain a creative consultant on the series.

Lucas himself said in October he had story treatments for Episodes 7, 8 and 9, which he would hand over to Kennedy, who assured him that she would adhere to his ideas.

(This version of the story was corrected to clarify that Abrams directed "Mission: Impossible III" and not "Mission Impossible - Ghost Protocol" as earlier stated in paragraph eight.)

Reggie Darling: Antiques Week 2013 At Last, Part II

Sotheby's Americana Preview
The next stop on our auction house preview perambulation was at Sotheby's on the Upper East Side.
Sotheby's has a lot more on display in their showrooms this Antiques Week than Christie's does. ?In my experience, these two major auction houses trade places every other year or so in bringing in the most Americana to sell during Antiques Week. ?This year it was clearly Sotheby's turn to shine.

When one enters the exhibition rooms at Sotheby's one is confronted by a monumental Federal-era clock attributed to Simon Willard (1753-1848), as seen in the following photograph. ?The clock's case is thought to have been carved by none other than the master carver Samuel McIntire (1757-1811). ?Even though the clock's face appears to be rather over-restored, at least to this writer's eye, it didn't detract from the timepiece's magnificence one bit. ?A nearly identical one is in the collection of the White House, in Washington, D.C..

Please note the Samuel Gragg bentwood armchair, ca. 1810 (estimated $6,000 to $12,000), on the left of the preceding photograph, Dear Reader, and the two klismos chairs in the foreground attributed to the Finlay Brothers of Baltimore, ca. 1810-1815 (estimated $80,000 to $120,000 for each). ?This is serious stuff, indeed.
I was rather taken with this pencil and wash drawing of Mount Vernon by Benjamin Henry Latrobe (1765-1820). ?It once hung at Mount Vernon (it was a gift of the artist to George Washington the year before he died) and really should be returned there, I think. ?I hope the good ladies of the Mount Vernon Ladies Association are feeling flush these days and will find their way to returning the drawing to where it belongs, on the banks of the Potomac River.
There were any number of Audubon prints in the Sotheby's sale, four of which can be seen in the preceding photograph. ?I'm often amazed at the prices such prints go for, with very rare ones sometimes selling in excess of $100,000.

One of the highlights of the Sotheby's sale is this double portrait of a brother and sister painted by the New York itinerant artist Ammi Philips (1788-1865). ?It is estimated at an aggressive $250,000 to $300,000, which is far more than the $25,000 to $50,000 that a single person's portrait by this artist typically sells for in such sales.
I confess that I was more taken by an assembled collection of early 19th-century gouaches of scenes in Italy. ?I particularly like the pair of paintings in the upper middle of the preceding photograph, depicting the watery interior of Grotto Azzurra in Capri (estimated $5,000 to $10,000 for the pair).
The Sotheby's sale includes some outstanding chairs attributed to the Seymours of Boston. ?The chair shown here is one of a pair, although they are being sold separately.
Personally, I prefer the much more reasonably estimated chairs in the sale attributed to Duncan Phyfe, which were once owned by Berry Tracy, the former curator of the American Wing at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. ?The chair shown above, also one of a pair, has the very desirable hairy paw feet that pushes prices for Phyfe chairs (and furniture in general) through the roof, and justifiably so?as they are killer. ?These Phyfe chairs are estimated to sell for a mere $5,000 and $15,000 for the pair (a bargain relative to the Seymour chairs, in my view). ?Even though Darlington House is packed to the gills these days, I'm sure I could find a place for the Phyfe chairs, at least if I really had to . . .
In addition to examples of best-quality furniture made by name-brand cabinetmakers, the Sotheby's sale includes lots of good, hearty, unlabeled, unattributed, and handsome furniture that would make any homeowner proud.
Much of the furniture on display is estimated to sell for reasonable prices, considering its quality and rarity. ?And what a value it is in today's markets, where mass-produced mid-20th-century options frequently cost substantially more! ?These days, antiques are really quite reasonable, indeed.
What one will not find at a bargain basement price, though, is this superb example of a French gilt bronze Washington clock made for the American market, which Reggie would be more than happy to own should he have the extra jack required to cover the hammer price it is expected to go for. ?I suspect the clock?a trophy piece if there ever is one?will go for well above the estimate when the hammer falls.
I was intrigued to see an excellent assortment of American Gothic Revival furniture at the Sotheby's preview. ?It almost made me want to go out and buy an Alexander Jackson Davis (1803-1892) designed villa along the Hudson River to furnish. ?I wonder . . . is that my life's next challenge?
The Sotheby's sale has cases and cases of silver holloware, stemware, and presentation pieces. ?Do you really believe no one wants silver any more? ?The estimates were sufficiently high, in my view, to indicate that Sotheby's believes there are still serious collectors out there who would like to own it.
I was interested to see there are a number of lots in the Sotheby's sale consigned by the Brooke Astor estate. ?Disposing of the mother lode of Mrs. Astor's silver, china, crystal, furniture, jewelry, art, etc., ?has taken many, many months and any number of auction houses to effect. ?I wonder, is this the last of it?
I believe these wine glasses may have once graced the table on Vincent Astor's yacht Nourmahal. ?For but a few thousand dollars they, too, can grace your dining room table.

Odd biochemistry yields lethal bacterial protein

Jan. 22, 2013 ? While working out the structure of a cell-killing protein produced by some strains of the bacterium Enterococcus faecalis, researchers stumbled on a bit of unusual biochemistry. They found that a single enzyme helps form distinctly different, three-dimensional ring structures in the protein, one of which had never been observed before.

The new findings, reported in Nature Chemical Biology, should help scientists find new ways to target the enterococcal cytolysin protein, a "virulence factor that is associated with acute infection in humans," said University of Illinois chemistry and Institute for Genomic Biology professor Wilfred van der Donk, who conducted the study with graduate student Weixin Tang.

Enterococcus faecalis (EN-ter-oh-cock-us faye-KAY-liss) is a normal microbial inhabitant of the gastrointestinal tracts of humans and other mammals and generally does not harm its host. Some virulent strains, however, produce cytolysin (sigh-toe-LIE-sin), a protein that, once assembled, attacks other microbes and kills mammalian cells.

"The cytolysin protein made by Enterococcus faecalis consists of two compounds that have no activity by themselves but when combined kill human cells," van der Donk said. "We know from epidemiological studies that if you are infected with a strain of E. faecalis that has the genes to make cytolysin, you have a significantly higher chance of dying from your infection." E. faecalis contributes to root canal infections, urinary tract infections, endocarditis, meningitis, bacteremia and other infections.

Enterococcal cytolysin belongs to a class of antibiotic proteins, called lantibiotics, which have two or more sulfur-containing ring structures. Scientists had been unable to determine the three-dimensional structure of this cytolysin because the bacterium produces it at very low concentrations. Another problem that has stymied researchers is that the two protein components of cytolysin tend to clump together when put in a lab dish.

Van der Donk and Tang got around these problems by producing the two cytolysin components separately in another bacterium, Escherichia coli (esh-uh-REE-kee-uh KOH-lie), and analyzing them separately.

"The two components are both cyclic peptides, one with three rings and the other with two rings," van der Donk said. "Curiously, a single enzyme makes both compounds."

In a series of experiments, the researchers found that one ring on each of the proteins adopted a (D-L) stereochemistry that is common in lantibiotics (see image, above). But the other rings all had an unusual (L-L) configuration, something van der Donk had never seen before.

Scientists had assumed that the enzyme that shaped enterococcal cytolysin, a lantibiotic synthetase, acted like a three-dimensional mold that gave the ring structures of cytolysin the exact same stereochemistry, van der Donk said.

"But we found that the enzyme, enterococcal cytolysin synthetase, makes the rings with different stereochemistry," he said. "I don't know of any other examples where one enzyme can make very similar products but with different stereochemistries."

The researchers don't know how the enzyme accomplishes this feat, but found a clue in the sequence of amino acids that make up the protein rings. The chemical characteristics of the three amino acids in the middle of the ring structure and their proximity to another amino acid, a cysteine, determined whether the rings took on a D-L or L-L stereochemistry.

The researchers tested the idea that the amino acid sequence of the cytolysin protein was guiding the stereochemistry by looking at other lantibiotic proteins with similar sequences. So far, every protein they've tested that has the same sequence characteristics conforms to the pattern they discovered, van der Donk said.

Further tests showed that the cytolysin produced in E. coli had the same anti-microbial and cell-killing potency as the E. faecalis variety.

"Knowing the structure of enterococcal cytolysin and having a method to produce it in relatively large quantities will allow scientists to find out how it kills human cells and, in turn, how we might fight against it," van der Donk said.

The National Institutes of Health supported this research. Van der Donk also is a Howard Hughes Medical Institute investigator.

China's Huawai criticizes US security complaints

BEIJING (AP) ? Chinese tech giant Huawei on Monday criticized U.S. claims the company might be a security risk as trade protectionism that harms consumers.

The comments came as Huawei Technologies Ltd., a maker of network switching gear and smartphones, disclosed details of its 2012 performance in an effort to show transparency and allay security concerns.

At a news conference, chief financial officer Cathy Meng expressed frustration about U.S. security complaints. She said Americans pay about twice what Europeans do for third- and fourth-generation mobile phone service and suggested it was due to impediments to competition.

"These measures using trade protectionism to interfere with free competition will ultimately harm the benefits of end users and consumers," Meng said. "As we continue to invest in this industry and work with our customers, our customers and markets generally see the value we create for them."

Outside the United States, Huawei has grown rapidly in developing countries and is increasing sales in Europe, becoming the first Chinese firm to break into the top ranks of global technology companies. It is challenging Sweden's Ericsson AB for the status of the biggest network gear supplier.

Last year's profit rose 33 percent over 2011 to 15.4 billion yuan ($2.4 billion) on sales of 220.2 billion yuan ($34.9 billion), according to Meng. Still, last year's profit was less than half 2010's high of 24.7 billion yuan ($3.9 billion).

Huawei is privately held but has released more financial details in recent years in an effort to ease concern about the company.

Monday's news conference was the first of its kind for Huawei and part of an effort to "honor our commitment to transparency," said Meng, a daughter of Huawei founder Ren Zhengfei. She did not respond directly to a question about possible plans for further disclosures about things such as how key company decisions are made.

Huawei was set up in 1987 by Ren, a former Chinese military engineer, to sell imported telecoms equipment and later started to develop its own. The company says it is owned by its employees and denies it is controlled by the communist government or China's military, but such concerns have hampered its efforts to expand in the United States.

In October, a U.S. congressional panel recommended phone carriers avoid doing business with it or its smaller Chinese rival, ZTE Corp. Beijing rejected the report as false and an effort to block Chinese companies from the U.S. market.

In Australia, Huawei suffered a setback in 2011 when the government barred it from bidding to work on a national broadband network.

The U.S. and Australian actions highlight concern about Beijing's cyber warfare efforts, a spate of hacking attempts aimed at Western companies and the role of Chinese equipment providers, which are expanding abroad.

Huawei issued a pledge last year not to cooperate with spying.

Its financial rebound came as ZTE warned Sunday it is likely to report a loss for 2012 of 2.5 billion yuan to 2.9 billion yuan ($400 million to 460 million) due to thinner margins on contracts in Africa, South America, China and elsewhere in Asia.

Huawei says it serves 35 of the world's 50 biggest telecoms carriers. The company has 140,000 employees and research and development centers in Europe, Silicon Valley and elsewhere. Meng said R-and-D spending last year rose 26 percent to 29.9 billion yuan ($4.7 billion).

Last year, only one-third of sales came from its home China market, according to Meng. Europe, the Middle East and Africa accounted for 35 percent of sales, while 17 percent of sales were in other Asia-Pacific markets and 15 percent from the Americas.

Meng said Huawei paid 12.5 billion yuan ($1.9 billion) in employee bonuses last year but said some top executives received no bonus because they failed to meet personal performance targets. She gave no other details.

Major carriers need to keep making long-term investments and are forecast to increase spending by about 5 percent this year, Meng said. She said that should help to insulate Huawei from swings in the global economy.

"It's not as if people stop talking on the phone because the economy is weaker," Meng said. "We will not be influenced too much by the economic downturn in our industry."

Sharapova, Makarova into Aussie Open quarterfinals

MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) ? Maria Sharapova beat Kirsten Flipkens 6-1, 6-0 on Sunday to continue a dominant and unparalleled run to the Australian Open quarterfinals.

The No. 2-ranked Sharapova conceded only five games in her first four matches, a record at the season's first major.

"Well I'm certainly happy to be playing this well but ... it only gets tougher from here," said Sharapova, who is playing her first tournament of 2013 after not playing an exhibition match in South Korea and a warmup event at Brisbane because of an injured right collarbone.

The reigning French Open champion is showing no signs of trouble with the collarbone in Melbourne.

Steffi Graf conceded only eight games in her opening four matches here in 1989, when she won the second of her three straight Australian Open titles. Monica Seles matched that mark.

Sharapova has been even more dominant. She started with a pair of 6-0, 6-0 wins ? the first time that has happened at a major since 1985 ? and then beat seven-time Grand Slam winner Venus Williams 6-1, 6-3 in the third round.

She next plays fellow Russian Ekaterina Makarova, who ousted fifth-seeded Angelique Kerber 7-5, 6-4. Sharapova beat Makarova in the quarterfinals here last year on her way to the final.

"I really want to play against Maria because I lost here last year," Makarova said. "Now I'm pretty confident and I like my game.

"Last year I was so surprised ... and I had so many thoughts in my mind. This year I'm a little bit used to it, so I think I'll be ready to play a good game."

No. 19-seeded Makarova took out the highest seed to tumble so far at the season's first major, causing another fourth-round surprise like she did here last year with an upset win over Serena Williams.

Kerber and Makarova were two of only four women in 2012 to beat Williams, who lost only one match in the second half of last season as she collected titles at Wimbledon, the London Olympics, the U.S. Open and the WTA Championships.

"Seems like it was the same this year and last year. Unbelievable feeling," Makarova said. "I really like to play here. The crowd is so perfect."

In the first men's match Sunday, fourth-seeded David Ferrer had a 6-2, 6-1, 6-4 win over No. 16 Kei Nishikori of Japan to reach the quarterfinals, where he will meet Spaniard Nicolas Almagro.

Nishikori had won two of his previous three matches with Ferrer and was a quarterfinalist in Australia last year, but struggled with 65 unforced errors in the 2-hour, 10-minute match.

Almagro advanced later Sunday, leading 6-2, 5-1 when No. 8 Janko Tipsaveric retired from their fourth-round match.

It will be the first all-Spanish quarterfinal at the Australian Open since 2011, when Ferrer ended Rafael Nadal's bid for a sequence of four consecutive major titles.

No. 1-ranked Novak Djokovic, who has the past two Australian titles, had a night match against No. 15 Stanislas Wawrinka.

On Saturday night, No. 2-ranked Roger Federer knocked Bernard Tomic out of the tournament to end Australia's participation in the singles.

Federer gave the 20-year-old Aussie an instant reality check by breaking him in the very first game, ending Tomic's run of 76 service games unbroken, to set up a 6-4, 7-6 (5), 6-1 win.

Federer, who has won four of his 17 Grand Slam titles at Melbourne Park, also beat Tomic in the fourth round here last year.

"It's not my favorite part of the job beating up on the hometown heroes," Federer told the crowd at Rod Laver Arena, where he has won four of his 17 Grand Slam titles.

It was Federer's 250th win at a Grand Slam event. He next plays big-serving Canadians Milos Raonic, who had 7-6 (4), 6-3, 6-4 win over Germany's Philipp Kohlschreiber.

The third round ended in the early hours of Sunday, when No. 14-seeded Gilles Simon outlasted fellow Frenchman Gael Monfils 6-4, 6-4, 4-6, 1-6, 8-6 in a match that finished at 12:32 a.m. local time.

His next match is Monday against U.S. Open champion Andy Murray.

Simon and Jeremy Chardy, who ousted 2009 U.S. Open champion Juan Martin del Potro 6-3, 6-3, 6-7 (3), 3-6, 6-3, were among the four Frenchman who advanced on Saturday.

The others ? No. 7-seeded Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and No. 9 Richard Gasquet ? will meet in the next round.

On the women's side, defending champion Victoria Azarenka beat injured American Jamie Hampton 6-4, 4-6. 6-2 and Serena Williams had a 6-1, 6-3 victory against Japan's Ayumi Morita.

American teenager Sloane Stephens beat Laura Robson 7-5, 6-3 to set up a fourth-round match against Bojana Jovanovski, who ended the run of 42-year-old Kimiko Date-Krumm in the third round.

Kevin Bacon hunts a killer in 'The Following'

By Gael Fashingbauer Cooper, NBC News

A creepy new TV series, engrossing police drama and yet another red-carpet awards show are our picks for the best in entertainment this week.

MONDAY: 'The Following'
The trailer for "The Following" makes the new FOX drama look like a big-screen movie. It stars Kevin Bacon, a major name in his own right, and the plot will remind you of a good old-fashioned action-horror movie, where one retired FBI agent returns to hunt down the serial killer he caught once before. Bacon plays the agent, Ryan Hardy, and James Purefoy plays Joe Carroll, the murderous college professor whose creepy Manson-like followers are willing to take over the killing for him. (Premieres Jan. 21, 9 p.m., FOX.)

TUESDAY: 'End of Watch' on home video
Jake Gyllenhaal read the "End of Watch" script in an hour and immediately declared he wanted to star in it, reports Collider.com. ?Gyllenhaal plays Officer Brian Taylor in the indie cop drama, with Michael Pena as his partner, Mike Zavala. The two run afoul of a Mexican drug cartel in Los Angeles and soon find themselves in a tangled situation they can't escape. Roger Ebert called it "one of the best police movies in recent years." (On DVD and Blu-ray Jan. 22.)

SUNDAY:?Screen Actors Guild Awards
Yes, all these awards shows are just warm-ups for the granddaddy of them all, the Academy Awards on Feb. 24. But all of them offer their own share of glitzy gowns, heart-warming or stumbly speeches and deserving winners, plus those who got robbed. ?Like the Golden Globes, the Screen Actors Guild Awards cover both movies and television. On the movies side, "Lincoln," "Silver Linings Playbook" and "Les Miserables" lead all nominees with four apiece. The only television show to match that number is "Modern Family." Dick Van Dyke will receive the organization's life achievement award. Somehow we don't think his acceptance speech will make headlines in quite the way Jodie Foster's did. (Jan. 27, 8 p.m., TNT and TBS.)

Former Secretary of State Rice joins CBS News

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Just in time for inauguration coverage, former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice has joined CBS News as a contributor.

Rice, who served as secretary of state during President George W. Bush's second term, made her debut on "Face the Nation" Sunday and will be included in inauguration coverage on Monday.

CBS News Chairman Jeff Fager and president David Rhodes made the announcement Sunday, saying Rice "will use her insight and vast experience to explore issues facing America at home and abroad."

Rice was the first African-American woman to serve as secretary of state, following Colin Powell in the office. She was Bush's national security adviser during his first term and worked on the National Security Council under his father, President George H.W. Bush.

As secretary of state, Rice warned of weapons of mass destruction in pressing for war in Iraq that killed more than 4,400 Americans. No weapons of mass destruction were found.

More recently, Rice was part of the team offering Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney general strategy and advice on foreign policy.

Her primetime speech at the Republican National Convention in August received raves. She did not mention President Barack Obama by name, but spoke of the crisis in education and the need for immigration laws that protect the country's borders while meeting economic needs. She also said that although there was a sense that for far too long America has carried the burdens of supporting free people and free markets, but that if the United States does not lead no one will lead, fostering chaos.

NASA Laser Beams Send Mona Lisa to the Moon and Back

Laser Beamed Mona Lisa Error CorrectionAn image of the Mona Lisa has traveled nearly 240,000 miles digitally, going from the Next Generation Satellite Laser Ranging station at NASA?s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md., to the Lunar Orbiter Laser Altimeter (LOLA) instrument on NASA?s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter. By transmitting the image on top of on laser pulses regularly sent in order to track position, simultaneous laser communication and tracking was achieved.

?This is the first time anyone has achieved one-way laser communication at planetary distances,? says David Smith of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. ?In the near future, this type of simple laser communication might serve as a backup for the radio communication that satellites use. In the more distant future, it may allow communication at higher data rates than present radio links can provide.?

Satellites which go outside of Earth orbit characteristically use radio waves for tracking and communication. The Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter is the only satellite in orbit around a body other than Earth to be tracked by laser also.

?Because LRO is already set up to receive laser signals through the LOLA instrument, we had a unique opportunity to demonstrate one-way laser communication with a distant satellite,? explained Xiaoli Sun, scientist at NASA Goddard and lead author of a paper detailing the work.

Timing a Pixel Array

The key to transmitting the image was accurate timing. Sun and his team divided the Mona Lisa image into an array of 152 pixels by 200 pixels. Each pixel was converted into a shade of gray, represented by a number between zero and 4,095. (I guess 50 shades of grey wasn?t to their liking.) Every pixel was then transmitted by a laser pulse, with the pulse being fired in one of 4,096 possible time slots during a brief time window allotted for laser tracking. The complete image was transmitted at a data rate of about 300 bits per second.

Received by LRO?s Lunar Orbiter Laser Altimeter instrument, the laser pulses reconstructed the image based on the arrival times of the pulses from Earth. This was accomplished with no interruption of LOLA?s primary task of mapping the moon?s elevation and terrain and the Goddard Space Flight Center?s main task of tracking LRO. The image was then returned to Earth using the spacecraft?s radio telemetry system in order to verify the success of the laser transmission.

Error Correction by Reed-Solomon Coding

Transmission errors were introduced by turbulence in Earth?s atmosphere, even when the sky was clear. To overcome these effects, Sun and colleagues used Reed-Solomon coding, which is the same type of error-correction code commonly used in CDs and DVDs. The illustration at the top of the page shows the image before and after correction. The white stripe indicates a brief period when transmission was paused.

?This pathfinding achievement sets the stage for the Lunar Laser Communications Demonstration (LLCD), a high data rate laser-communication demonstrations that will be a central feature of NASA?s next moon mission, the Lunar Atmosphere and Dust Environment Explorer (LADEE),? says Goddard?s Richard Vondrak.

The next step following the Lunar Laser Communications Demonstration is the Laser Communications Relay Demonstration (LCRD), NASA?s first long-duration optical communications mission. LCRD will help develop concepts and deliver technologies applicable to near-Earth and deep-space communication.

Cervical Cancer: A curable disease if screened on time

Poor Awareness in Nigeria and Africa

According to survey conducted in Nigeria, only 10% of women population had heard about cervical cancer. Only a less than 5% who were interviewed had attended the screening before. According to data collected 80,000 African women get a diagnosis of cervical cancer annually. And a total of 53,000 women die of this virus annually. The awareness is so low among educated population that there were very low chances of hope for the illiterate bunch of people.

Initiatives By Femi Olaleye

A social enterprise company Optical healthcare has been set up in UK by Femi Olaleye. This company extends an arm to help those suffering from cervical cancer at low-cost clinics. These clinics popularly known as Optical medical centers were opened in Mafoluku, Ketu, Masha and Surulere. With these clinics they were able to deliver cancer screening to more than 6000 women within one year?s time. A new Optical centre care foundation is set up to deliver free cancer screening services to women on Fridays. This has been possible with help of donations given by individuals and corporate sponsors.

Facts About Cervical Cancer

This dreadous disease is caused by Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) and is found most in Nigeria. All sexually active women in the reproductive age group are prone to this virus. The disease has a pre cancerous phase because of which it becomes difficult for the doctors to treat the women once they have been screened. The major cause of spread of this cancer is ignorance among women. This is why this cancer kills one woman every hour in Nigeria.

Prevention is better than Cure

Cervical cancer is 100% preventable through regular screening and vaccination against HPV. A potent vaccine has also been found to prevent women from the cancer. The three doses over a period of six months is recommended for lifelong immunity. Once transmitted, this virus is incurable. Thereby regular screening is must.

Challenges to create awareness

Fear among people to undergo the test is one big challenge faced. They get scared about the result which according to them is incurable. Also illiteracy among population causes them to avoid going through screening and they rather prefer some spiritual power intervention for the safety of their lives.

Broadcasting stations and marketing companies are asked for help to create awareness among people. Through this article we would like to convey that VIA and PAP are screening tests available to safeguard the lives of millions of women around the globe.

Taxes on property after bk and foreclosure process question

Hi all. I had a question since it is tax season. My property was discharged through ch 7 bk back in 2009. It has not foreclosed yet. The taxes were escrowd (sp) in the mortgage that was included in the bk. Am I correct to assume that I am not liable for the property taxes? Being that the property has not had a foreclosure sale date, my name is still attached to it. But a foreclosure will change that. I haven't received any thing from the county about being late or anything so I again assume that Chase pays them?

Hello Syrix,

Yes, this is correct if you have not been making payments on the mortgage nor the property taxes the lender will step in to make sure they are paid.

6 Great Outdoor Rinks in Ottawa

ottawa life

?

?

-

By Brian Clarke

There is a silver lining in the dark cloud that is the 20-below weather of the past few days: outdoor rink conditions are going to be near perfect this weekend.

Ottawa boasts one of the best volunteer rink maintenance programs in the country and roughly 250 outdoor rinks.? I can?t pretend I?ve tried a large enough sample size of these rinks to truly offer a list of the best in Ottawa.? In fact, it?d be a stretch to say I?ve skated on 10% of Ottawa?s rinks in my lifetime.

However, with many people searching for a good spot to skate this weekend, I?d like to offer a short list of the rinks that I?ve consistently enjoyed over the past ten years or so.

Kaladar Park

I?m a bit biased because this is the rink I grew up using.? Countless hours of child-Brian pretending to be an NHL superstar were spent on this rink (actually, adult-Brian still does the same thing at times).? Located just off Heron Road in Old Ottawa South, the Kaladar rink always has great ice conditions and has two rinks ? a small one for non-hockey skaters, and one within the boards for hockey games ? so everyone can enjoy this rink.

Brewer Park

Known for its outdoor speed skating oval, Brewer Park is a great location for a diverse range of skaters.? It?s got space for hockey players, speed skaters, and recreational skaters and children.? If only it had an outdoor figure skating and curling rinks it would be the winter skating sport heaven/perfect Canadian stereotype.? Brewer Park is located on Bronson Avenue, directly across the street from Carleton University.

Centerpointe

For those skaters who do not want to play hockey and just want to skate, this is the perfect spot.? It?s one of the few non-hockey outdoor rinks in the city, making it great for children and others learning how to skate, as well as for skating dates.? It is located right behind the City of Ottawa buildings at Centerpointe, just off Woodroofe road near Algonquin College

Tanglewood

For weekend pickup hockey games, this is probably my favourite outdoor rink.? Located on Woodfield Drive, just off Merivale Road in Nepean, it usually has great ice conditions and is a large rink with high boards.? More importantly, the rink draws a large number of people so you can always get great games of pickup going fairly easily.

The Rideau Canal

Obviously the Canal has to be included.? While it?s not what most people think of when you say the phrase ?outdoor rink?, the Rideau Canal is Ottawa?s premiere skating option.? Every Ottawa resident needs to skate on the Canal once per winter, and this experience is enough to draw in tourists and visitors in the tourism off-season.

And what do you know, the Canal partially opened for business this morning! Be sure to check which stretches of the Canal are open, as well as ice conditions by visiting the NCC website.

The one right around the corner

Don?t think any of the above options are suitable for you this weekend? Well no matter where you are in Ottawa, there is sure to be an outdoor rink right around the corner.? You can?t go wrong with any of them. So just grab a pair of skates and get out there!

Where is your favourite outdoor rink in Ottawa? Share in the comments below.

Church attempts to set up food bank

All Saints Church, in Harrow Weald, works with the Trussell Trust to set up food bank

A Harrow church is hoping to set up a food bank to help the borough?s struggling families.

Chiefs hire Packers' Dorsey as general manager

By DAVE SKRETTA

AP Sports Writer

Associated Press Sports

updated 10:53 p.m. ET Jan. 12, 2013

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - The Kansas City Chiefs must have figured if the Green Bay Packers were playing in the NFC playoffs on Saturday night, they were making a wise choice for their next general manager.

The Chiefs announced during the first half of the Packers' game against the San Francisco 49ers that they had hired longtime Green Bay personnel man John Dorsey to replace Scott Pioli, who was fired after four tumultuous years and a 2-14 finish this past season.

The team announced the hiring on Twitter, but did not make Dorsey, Chiefs chairman Clark Hunt or new coach Andy Reid available to comment. An introductory news conference was scheduled for Monday.

Hunt did describe his ideal GM candidate in an interview earlier in the week: "First of all, someone who's a sharp talent evaluator," he said. "I'd like someone who's been part of a successful program from a talent standpoint. Someone who's a good communicator, a good manager, and last but really not least, someone who will work well with Andy."

Hunt may as well have been describing Dorsey, a linebacker for the Packers in the 1980s.

Dorsey was instrumental in helping build Green Bay into a perennial contender, first as a college scout from 1991-97 and then as director of college scouting from 1997-98 - a period that roughly coincided with Reid's time as a Packers assistant coach.

Dorsey spent one season with the Seattle Seahawks before returning to Green Bay, where he was director of college scouting from 2000-12 and director of football operations this season.

During that time, the Packers have won six division titles, a conference championship and the 2010 Super Bowl. They've also made nine playoff appearances in the past 12 seasons.

Dorsey helped select quarterback Aaron Rodgers with the 24th overall pick in the 2005 draft, and has been a part of several other solid draft choices: linebacker Nick Barnett in 2003, wide receiver Greg Jennings and linebacker A.J. Hawk in 2006, wide receiver Jordy Nelson and tight end Jermichael Finley in 2008, and defensive tackle B.J. Raji in 2010.

All that success in the NFL draft should come in handy. The Chiefs, with the league's worst record, will have the No. 1 pick for the first time in franchise history.

One of their most pressing needs is an upgrade at quarterback, where Matt Cassel and his six-year, $63 million contract were benched last season. Brady Quinn started half the season and fared little better, while third-string quarterback Ricky Stanzi never saw the field.

Reid said recently he's going to examine the players on the roster, and then consult with the GM - whoever it ended up being - on what other options are available.

That may include selecting a quarterback with the first pick in the draft.

"You don't build your team in free agency. That's not how you go about it," Reid said. "I've experienced that. I've seen it first-hand. You can afford to bring a guy in here or there, but you better have that nucleus of guys that you kind of raised up, and then what's important about that is you better make sure you have the right guy. And that's the general manager's responsibility. You have to identify the right guy."

Hunt and Reid both insisted that the coach will not have final say on personnel decisions, and that the general manager will be responsible for building a winning roster.

The Chiefs have won the AFC West twice since 1997, and haven't won a playoff game since '93.

"You'd love to get good players. That's the primary thing," Reid said. "As the general manager comes in, that's what he's going to do. That's his responsibility. He's going to narrow that whole field down, makes sure he brings in good football players."

Dorsey will report directly to Hunt, just as Pioli and other GMs have in the past. But during a massive overhaul of the Chiefs' front office, the chairman said he's altering the organizational structure so Reid also reports directly to him.

In the past, Chiefs coaches always reported to the general manager.

"The general manager has say over personnel. The coach has say over coaching the football team. And I want them to be able to work together," Hunt said. "That's the most important thing."
