Students Have Taken Over Florida Governor?s Office Demanding Justice For Trayvon

Students from around Florida have converged at the state capitol in Tallahassee demanding that Gov. Rick Scott heed their demands concerning racial profiling and school-to-prison pipeline issues in the wake of the George Zimmerman verdict. The youth ? mostly Latino and African Americans ? call themselves the ?Dream Defenders? and have occupied the building since Tuesday making pleas to speak with the governor. Leaders of the Defenders say Gov. Scott has so far refused to meet with them so they plan to stay overnight, through the weekend if necessary, until the governor responds.?

The Dream Defenders have been organizing around the killing of Trayvon Martin since the murder happened last spring. Today, hundreds of students, some as young as nine years old, are gathered to convince state lawmakers to pass the ?Trayvon Martin Act.? The bill would address racial profiling, ?Stand Your Ground? laws and school-to-prison pipeline issues ? ?the three pillars that led to George Zimmerman getting away with killing Trayvon Martin,? said Dream Defender Philip Agnew on a media call.?

Despite the governor?s rebuff of their request to meet with him, Agnew said, ?We?re not going anywhere. The State House Legislative building is a great place to live,? and joked that he even has some change-of-address forms.?

According to Dream Defender Ciara Taylor, the number of students occupying the building have ?doubled? since they started Tuesday. Annie Thomas, of the Miami-based Power U Center for Social Change, said students there are ?living in a state of fear? due to schools? ?zero tolerance? policies that lead to students of color getting excessively suspended and expelled. Trayvon Martin lived and went to school in Miami Gardens and was in Sanford the day he was murdered because he was serving a ten-day suspension from school.?

The Defenders? occupy action has earned the support of civil rights groups like the NAACP, which is holding its national convention not far away in Orlando. The NAACP?s state chapter excused one of its directors, Dale Landry, so he could travel to Tallahassee and support the Defenders. Landry delivered a letter from the Florida NAACP president that told Gov. Scott to listen to the concerns of the organized youth.?

?Parents across the state are questioning whether Stand Your Ground laws protect their children from vigilantism and racial profiling,? said Landry. ?

Landry also said that by Gov. Scott?s refusing to meet with the Defenders, ?he is affirming the sentiment that the state places no value on the lives of black and brown youth.?

UPDATE 9:02 EST 07/18/13: Communications staff from the Advancement Project just reported to me that Gov. Rick Scott has agreed to meet with the Dream Defenders and he is in a session with them right now that began with a prayer circle. I?m told the students are telling him they do not plan to leave the state capitol until their demands concerning the Trayvon Martin Act are met. More news to come soon.

U.S. regulators charge city of Miami with fraud

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Securities and Exchange Commission charged the city of Miami and its former budget director with fraud on Friday for allegedly making misleading statements and omissions in bond documents in order to mask general fund deficits.

The regulatory agency said it was seeking injunctive relief and financial penalties from the city as well as from former budget director Michael Boudreaux.

Noting that the city was already under a cease-and-desist order for similar misconduct in 2003, the regulators said in a written statement that starting in 2008 Boudreaux had moved money among city funds to disguise financial weaknesses from investors looking at three 2009 bond deals worth $153.5 million.

"Miami actively marketed bonds to the investing public, while hiding the true reason for interfund transfers to boost the image of its primary operating fund," said George Canellos, co-director of the SEC's Division of Enforcement.

Nearly a year ago, lawyers for Miami offered to shake up its financial staff as part of a proposal to settle the looming civil securities-fraud charges.

Balkan brass

Brasslands is an award-winning documentary film and CD soundtrack about a yearly trumpet competition that, with its more than a half-million fans, takes over Gu?a, a tiny Serbian village. The film is in limited release in the United States (check www.brasslands.com), but the raucous CD that is a celebration of the human spirit amid adversity is available through Evergreene Music.

Dance masters

The documentary Dancing at Jacob?s Pillow: Never Stand Still is a love letter about an iconic institution and dance ? ballet, modern, and jazz. Nestled deep in the Massachusetts Berkshires, Jacob?s Pillow was founded in the 1930s by modern-dance pioneer Ted Shawn. With interviews of such masters as Merce Cunningham, Mark Morris, Judith Jamison, and Suzanne Farrell, as well as a slew of up-and-coming talent, this award-winning film is an encyclopedia of American dance. It airs on PBS?s ?Great Performances? July 26.

Mob mentality

This seems to be the summer of the mob, with the James ?Whitey? Bulger trial under way in Boston and HBO offering old episodes of The Sopranos. National Geographic Channel connects all the dots with its comprehensive-if-chilling Inside the American Mob, premi?ring July 28 at 9 p.m. It?s a history lesson on the modern Mafia, told by FBI agents, informants, and police who helped take down La Cosa Nostra. Each hour examines a pivotal time frame, beginning with 1970 and leading up to the present.

Desktop coffee shop

It?s a website (soon to be an app) with a premise so simple that we were skeptical: The ambient sounds of a cafe provide a measure of white noise that may actually ease the creative process. Coffitivity (coffitivity.com) delivers to your desktop a low-level clink-and-chatter audio track that?s seamlessly looped ? and rather relaxing. Other sites provide other ambient sounds. But we?ll take this one, with a decaf latte, and save the trouble of finding a spot at Starbucks.

A career on 88 keys

Review: 'The Fosters' and the Complexities of TV, Child Welfare ...

Posted by .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) on Thursday, July 18, 2013

image
A show debuting this summer on ABC, The Fosters, details the lives of a lesbian couple raising a household that includes foster children.

I had high hopes for the new ABC Family cable show The Fosters when I saw the first promo. Produced by Jennifer Lopez, the new summer series highlights a new ?non-traditional? family with foster children, and I was anxious to see how a foster family and the child welfare system would be portrayed on TV.

As CEO of Bill Wilson Center, I oversee a foster family agency that certifies foster parents and places children in these homes. Recruiting, screening, training and certifying foster parents is not an easy process. Add to this task the high cost of housing in Silicon Valley, and it becomes even more challenging. I hoped that a new television show portraying foster families in a positive way would be beneficial to foster children and prospective foster parents.

But, after watching a few episodes, and speaking with a couple of foster kids about it, I have mixed feelings about The Fosters. Based on the first two shows, my head was spinning trying to keep up with the various plots and drama. First, The Fosters refers to the family name in addition to the children they are raising. Second, the foster parents are a bi-racial lesbian couple raising a family made up of biological, adoptive and foster children. One parent is a police officer?who divorced her police partner husband and, along with her biological son, moved in with her new lesbian partner?and the other is a vice principal of a school that their four teenagers attend.

It seems too convenient that the other mom is vice principal at the kids? school, the role that is usually in charge of school discipline. You can expect plenty of drama from this mom dealing with her fosterlings as part of her job.

While my head may be spinning from the show?s many plot lines, for some conservative ?family-values? groups, the nontraditional lesbian parents are creating a firestorm of postings on the Internet. Personal reviews swing from a low of ?zero? to a perfect ?10,? as supporters and detractors face off trying to kill or save the show. It?s hard to find any reviews focusing on the foster-child theme.

To get a grounded perspective on the show, I spoke with a couple of foster youth after they had watched it. And?no surprise here?they love the show. One 16-year-old girl, who has been in foster care since age eight, said that one of her foster homes was headed by a lesbian couple, so that part of the show resonated with her.

Also, a storyline in the show about selling pills prescribed to treat ADHD at school was realistic to another foster youth. Although it is the show?s biological son who takes the medication, foster youth are more than twice as likely to be placed on medication for behavior than other youth.

There are some heart-tugging scenes with the foster children, but each episode is full of every possible issue that can come up in families?from substance abuse and stealing money to undocumented youth runaways, race issues, bullying, and on and on.

I guess it was too much to expect a Leave It To Beaver type television show featuring foster youth. I just hope The Fosters decide to let the two ?temporary? kids stay with them. If not, maybe Bill Wilson Center can find some new foster parents for them.

Sparky Harlan, Executive Director/CEO at Bill Wilson Center, is a nationally recognized advocate for youth in foster care and in the juvenile justice system, as well as homeless and runaway youth.

Paul Bhattacharjee was found dead at age 53.

Paul Bhattacharjee, who had roles in "Casino Royale" and "The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel," has been found dead at age 53. Bhattacharjee's body was found near the Splash Point cliffs in Seaford, East Sussex, England on July 12, the BBC reports.

Bhattacharjee had last been seen leaving rehearsal for the London play "Talk Show" on July 10. His death is not being treated as suspicious, although authorities would not reveal the cause of death.

The actor played a doctor in "Casino Royale," the 2006 film that introduced Daniel Craig as James Bond. He was also known in England for his theater work and his role on the British soap, "EastEnders."

Actress Parminder Nagra tweeted, "Very sad to hear the news about Paul Bhattacharjee. My thoughts are with his loved ones."

"We are deeply shocked and completely devastated at the loss of our dear friend and brilliant colleague Paul," said Vicky Featherstone, artistic director of London's Royal Court Theater, where "Talk Show" was being performed. "We can?t even begin to imagine the impact his loss will have on everyone who knew him and all of our thoughts are with his loved ones."

Before Bhattacharjee's body was found, his son, Rahul Bhattacharjee-Prashar, 24, told the London Evening Standard that the family was "worried sick." He called his father's disappearance "completely out of character," saying "He was doing well in his career and everything seemed to be going okay."

Paul Billington, theater critic for the London Guardian, wrote that "Bhattacharjee was one of those actors whose name on a programme gave you the reassuring sense that you were in safe hands."

Bhattacharjee is survived by his son and his mother.

New Office 365 subscriptions get 12 months of free Xbox Live Gold (but not in the US)

Office 365 subscription now includes 12 months of free Xbox Live Gold (but not in the US)

Sweetening the deal of its cloud-based Office 365 suite, Microsoft will start bundling a year of Xbox Live Gold with any purchases of Office 365 Home Premium or Office 365 University made before September 28. You'll then pick up an Xbox Live code as you sign in during the initial Office setup. Unfortunately, the US isn't included on the deal, but the majority of Europe, plus regions of Asia, as well as Australia and Canada are all involved. Alongside the recent promise of two free games a month, Microsoft's made this bundled subscription a pretty tempting proposition.

Technology takes on breast cancer - News & events - ANU

Photo from Flickr

Photo from Flickr

An ANU student has developed a smartphone app for the early detection of breast cancer.

Software engineering undergraduate Sanjay Sreekumar designed the app for breast cancer awareness organisation The Young Adults Program.

?There?s a big potential for apps to provide a proactive means of detecting illnesses,? Mr Sreekumar said.

?This is not something that just targets specific people. It can affect everyone regardless of age and gender.?

?I always feel sympathetic when I hear stories about people suffering from cancer.? This is something I can do.?

The YAP app is designed to allow individuals to self-monitor for early signs of breast cancer. By providing monthly inputs of breast irregularities, the application can help identify if further medical screening is required.

Mr Sreekumar is currently working on improving the app by adding visual aids and multiple languages. He wants to get the word out to breast cancer organisations and promote the app internationally.

Following the success of this app he hopes to extend his software design skills to other health areas.

?The core of YAP?is providing an additional means of examination to save lives,? he said.

?It could apply to many illnesses. I want to see this technology being used world-wide.?

Sanjay Sreekumar is an undergraduate student in the School of Science and Engineering.

He'll join former Facebook designers Rasmus Andersson and Soleio Cuervo in his new position starting in early August; in the meantime, he'll be taking a few weeks off, though we wonder if he'll be sharing any pictures of his vacation or the amazing food on you-know-what.

SEMA Opens Phase Two of Innovation Facility | RV Business

The Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) recently opened phase two of its automotive innovation facility in Southern California, according to a press release.

Located at SEMA headquarters near Los Angeles, the SEMA Garage gives more than 6,000 businesses targeting the automotive aftermarket in California and across the country access to the special high-tech tools and equipment they need to get their products ? whether a $10 set of replacement wiper blades or a $10,000 engine modification ? off the drawing board and into customer hands.

Covering 15,000 square feet and filled with nearly $2 million of equipment, the SEMA Garage now includes the tools need by specialty product developers, including two vehicle lifts, a portable coordinate measuring machine (CMM) for 3D scanning, a 3D printer for fast prototyping, digital race car scales for the most precise vehicle weight measurements, and a dynamometer for power output measurements.

The SEMA Garage also offers a fully certified Executive Order (EO) aftermarket part certification lab. Any company wishing to sell aftermarket powertrain parts in the very lucrative California market must get an EO certification. Working in conjunction with the Auto Club, SEMA is able to provide its members with this valuable, low-cost resource for testing and obtaining such certifications.

This temperature-controlled test cell can simulate winter in the mountains, summer in the desert or anything in between. Testing meets all federal EPA and California Air Resources Boards (CARB) standards. Capabilities include emissions, fuel economy, acceleration, brake stopping distance, interior/exterior noise levels and handling.

?SEMA is in a unique position to provide members with a reliable and affordable way to develop and test their products, thereby helping them get their products to market quickly,? said Mike Spagnola, SEMA VP of the Product Development Center. ?We?re excited to expand on the capabilities of the SEMA Garage and look forward to putting them to good use.?

The SEMA Garage originally opened May 9 when the aftermarket part certification lab was first made available to members. The latest expansion marks the second phase of the organization?s ongoing effort to better serve the industry. In the coming months, a suite of marketing support tools will be added to complete the three-phase opening, in the form of a media center complete with a photo cove, photography center and media coordination services.

Attractive and successful: In bonobos, attractive females are more likely to win conflicts against males

[unable to retrieve full-text content]While intersexual dominance relations in bonobos never have been thoroughly studied in the wild, several ideas exist of how females attain their dominance status. Some researchers suggest that bonobo female dominance is facilitated by females forming coalitions which suppress male aggression. Others think of an evolutionary scenario in which females prefer non-aggressive males which renders male aggressiveness to a non-adaptive trait.

Trial of ex-Goldman trader about 'Wall Street greed': SEC

By Nate Raymond

NEW YORK (Reuters) - The trial of former Goldman Sachs bond trader Fabrice Tourre was about "Wall Street greed," a lawyer for the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission said as the trial began on Monday.

The SEC accuses Tourre of misleading investors in a mortgage investment called Abacus 2007-AC1 by not telling them that a hedge fund was involved in selecting the underlying assets and betting against it.

Matthew Martens, a lawyer for the SEC, told the jury the deal Tourre put together was "secretly designed to maximize the potential it would fail" to the benefit of the hedge fund, which made about $1 billion.

"In the end, Wall Street greed drove Mr. Tourre to lie and deceive," Martens said.

But Pamela Chepiga, a lawyer for Tourre, countered that the SEC was trying to turn her client into a "scapegoat."

"This is not a case about whether you approve or disapprove of Wall Street," she said.

The trial, scheduled to last three weeks, stems from a lawsuit the SEC filed against Goldman Sachs Group Inc and Tourre in 2010.

Tourre, who is no longer with Goldman and is earning a doctorate in economics at the University of Chicago, is on trial alone after Goldman agreed to pay a $550 million settlement in July 2010.

Tourre, wearing a black suit and orange tie, sat with his counsel as the lawyers made their opening arguments. He did not speak during Monday's proceedings, although he is expected to testify later in the trial.

'TRICKERY AND HALF-TRUTHS'

The SEC contends Tourre, at the time a vice president at Goldman, failed to disclose that Paulson & Co Inc, the hedge fund run by billionaire John Paulson, was involved in picking mortgage securities tied to the Abacus investment and that it was also shorting, or betting against, it.

Martens said Tourre, the principal Goldman employee involved in the Abacus deal, had a duty to be truthful with investors. Instead, he hid "critical information" in order to get them to buy in.

Tourre also misled ACA Capital Holdings Inc, a third-party firm ostensibly brought in to select the securities included in the CDO, into believing that Paulson was an equity investor in Abacus rather than taking a short position, Martens said.

The SEC contends ACA would not have participated had it known Paulson was betting against the investment. A different firm decided not to participate as ACA's portfolio selection agent when Tourre told it Paulson was going short, Martens said.

"His solution was trickery and half-truths," he said. "His solution was securities fraud."

Martens also displayed a much-cited email sent on January 23, 2007, by Tourre to his girlfriend at the time, saying of the financial markets that the "whole building is about to collapse anytime now."

"Only potential survivor, the fabulous Fab ... standing in the middle of all these complex, highly leveraged, exotic trades he created without necessarily understanding all of the implications of those monstrosities!!!" the email said.

Investors lost more than $1 billion after almost all the securities tied to the transaction were downgraded, the SEC says. Paulson earned about the same amount thanks to his bet, the SEC says.

Goldman made $15 million in fees on the deal, Martens said.

'NOTHING WRONG'

Chepiga, Tourre's lawyer, countered in her own opening arguments that her client had not misled investors or ACA.

She said ACA knew at the time that Paulson was widely reported to be engaged in an aggressive bet against the U.S. housing market after setting up two funds to short subprime investments in 2006.

"ACA knew Paulson took the opposite view," she said.

ACA, not Paulson, picked the securities tied to Abacus, she said, adding that ACA rejected dozens of securities that Paulson wanted included and ran a sophisticated computer analysis before signing off on them.

It was standard for a firm such as ACA to take input from investors in selecting securities for a CDO, Chepiga said. In the case of a deal such as Abacus, known as a synthetic collateralized debt obligation, it would be usual to consult both long and short investors, which by design have both long and short investors involved.

"The decision here was made by ACA," she said. "The selection here was made by ACA."

As for Tourre's email to his girlfriend, Chepiga said it was irrelevant, calling it "an old fashioned love letter" and noting it was referencing a Financial Times article, which he attached.

"I know two to three weeks from now you will find he did nothing wrong," Chepiga said.

JURY SELECTION

Earlier on Monday, the court picked five women and four men as jurors out of a pool of 48 people. They include a retired special education teacher, a former retail broker now teaching art history, a recent medical school graduate and an Episcopal priest.

U.S. District Judge Katherine Forrest excused some potential jurors after they said they had views about Wall Street or the role of banks in the financial crisis. The first juror to be excused said he had "a fairly jaundiced view of Wall Street."

Forrest also quizzed jurors on whether they had ever heard of Abacus, Tourre or his nickname, "Fabulous Fab."

At the start of the trial, Forrest warned the lawyers on both sides to "have a heart" and be mindful many jurors would not know the financial jargon expected to be used at trial.

Among the words or phrases she singled out were "asset-backed," "short," "security," "flip book" and "swap." She also cited the term "trading desk," saying "mere mortals don't know what a trading desk is."

"Do not assume people know what investment bankers do," Forrest added.

The case is SEC v. Tourre, U.S. District Court, Southern District of New York, No. 10-03229.

Hungary aims to close IMF office, repay loan early

BUDAPEST, Hungary (AP) ? Hungary is considering paying back early a bailout loan from the International Monetary Fund and also wants to close the organization's office in Budapest.

National Bank of Hungary President Gyorgy Matolcsy said Monday in a letter addressed to IMF chief Christine Lagarde that while they "appreciate the valuable support" the Washington-based group gave the country, the stand-by credit program "is almost complete." As such, it was no longer necessary for the IMF to keep an office in Hungary.

In 2008, during a Socialist-led government, Hungary received a rescue credit line of 20 billion euros ($25 billion at the time) from the IMF and other creditors. But Prime Minister Viktor Orban's government chose not to renew the deal in 2010 to avoid closer IMF scrutiny of its economic policies.

Mali fighters take pride of place in annual Bastille parade

Detachments of the French and Malian troops who defeated Islamist rebels in Mali earlier this year took pride of place in France?s traditional Bastille Day military parade along the Champs Elys?es? today.

Critics complained that the annual procession had been turned into a ?victory parade?, which did not reflect the somewhat muddled outcome of the French intervention.? Small groups of soldiers from the 13 African countries who are policing the uneasy peace in Mali also joined the parade and fly-past.

President Fran?ois Hollande, who saluted the troops from a military command vehicle, said that the presence of the veterans of the short, desert conflict was a ?tribute to those who helped to banish terrorism? from Mali. ?We did achieve a victory and we should be proud of it,? he said.

Political opponents said that Mr Hollande was trying to use his broadly successful Malian intervention to distract from France?s economic problems and his poor poll ratings? after 14 months in office.

The parade was the shortest for many years. There were 35 per cent fewer military vehicles than in 2012 and 12 per cent fewer aircraft to reflect Mr Hollande?s wider efforts to reduce the cost of the French state. Although military spending has been slashed less than other areas, the Defence Minister, Jean-Yves Le Drian acknowledged yesterday that the prospect of further cuts, so soon after the Mali ?victory?, was undermining morale in the French military.

The UN Secretary General, Ban Ki-moon was invited to? the parade along? with the defence ministers from the 13 African countries policing Mali. Although the fighting is largely over, 3,200 French soldiers remain in Mali to protect the presidential elections in two weeks? time.

After the parade, President Hollande gave a ?state of the nation? interview to two French television channels in which he claimed that ?economic recovery? was now under way. He repeated his pledge that the rising tide of unemployment would be reversed from the start of next year.

Mr Hollande, who has been criticised at home and abroad, for raising taxes too sharply promised that in 2014 higher taxes would only be imposed ?if necessary? and then by the least amounts possible?.

Track fault thought to be cause of fatal rail accident

A fault in the track is believed to have caused the train crash 25 miles south of Paris on Friday night in which six people died.

Although vandalism or sabotage have not been ruled out, President Fran?ois Hollande said yesterday that an ?equipment failure? appeared to have caused France?s worst railway accident for eight years.

Four of those who died, including a couple in their 80s, were waiting for a train at the suburban station at Br?tigny-sur-Orge when the last four carriages of a Paris-to-Limoges express de-railed at 80mph and smashed into the platform. The other two victims were aboard the express.

The accident has generated a row over the alleged obsolescence of equipment on ?traditional? railway lines in France after 30 years of priority investment in high-speed railway lines. Three investigations have been launched.

Senior officials of the French state railways, the SNCF, say the accident was caused by a metal joint in the track which came loose? and lodged in a complex piece of point work, derailing the last four carriages of the express.

Verlander no-hits Texas until 7th, Tigers win

(AP) ? Justin Verlander's no-hit bid was finally over in the seventh inning ? and before refocusing, the Detroit ace saw his shortstop do something amusing.

"When the double was hit, and the ball came back in, everybody started cheering," Verlander said. "(Jhonny) Peralta caught the ball and looked up at the board checking the hits. That's when I knew he didn't know. I was like, 'Come on, Jhonny.'"

Verlander fell seven outs short of his third career no-hitter, but the Detroit ace looked sharp in his final start before the All-Star break, and the Tigers backed him with three home runs in a 5-0 victory over the Texas Rangers on Sunday.

Mitch Moreland's two-out double to right-center broke up Verlander's bid. Verlander (10-6) left the game after the seventh with a tight right quad muscle, having allowed just that one hit and three walks.

"It was just kind of starting to get tight," Verlander said. "There's really no need to push it."

Torii Hunter, Victor Martinez and Jhonny Peralta hit solo homers off Texas starter Martin Perez (3-2). The Rangers finished with two hits.

Verlander was picked for the American League All-Star team but was replaced for Tuesday night's event. Under baseball's labor contract, pitchers who start on the Sunday before the All-Star game may opt not to participate.

Although he also took a no-hitter into the seventh at Houston on May 5, Verlander's overpowering aura hasn't been quite the same this season. Sunday's gem lowered his ERA to 3.50.

He struck out only three but was effective anyway.

"It was a little bit different Verlander than what we usually see," Moreland said. "He mixed a lot of off-speed in there and kept us off-balance. I felt like we hit some balls hard, but it seemed like they went right to them. You've got to tip your hat to what he did, it's always a battle going against him and he's where he's at for a reason. It was a tough one for us."

Verlander no-hit Toronto on May 7, 2011. His other no-hitter came June 12, 2007, against Milwaukee.

Nolan Ryan, Sandy Koufax, Bob Feller and Cy Young are among the five pitchers with at least three no-hitters. Larry Corcoran, an ambidextrous pitcher who won 177 games from 1880-85, is the other one.

Verlander took the mound about 12 hours after San Francisco's Tim Lincecum finished a no-hitter of his own at San Diego.

The drama began building in Detroit in the fourth when Tigers left fielder Matt Tuiasosopo got turned around on a line drive by Nelson Cruz. He was able to recover and reach up for the catch.

In the fifth, Hunter ran to the corner in right to catch a flyball by Elvis Andrus. Jurickson Profar, the next hitter, sent a smash toward Martinez, who was playing first base because Prince Fielder was Detroit's designated hitter Sunday. Martinez made the stop and took the ball to first himself for the third out of the inning.

Hunter went deep in the first to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead, and Martinez and Peralta hit back-to-back homers in the fourth.

Detroit added two runs in the sixth on RBI singles by Peralta and Tuiasosopo, although that rally made Verlander wait a while before taking the mound again.

The following inning was when Moreland connected for the first Texas hit. Neither Hunter nor center fielder Austin Jackson had much of a shot at Moreland's drive.

"Obviously, it's one of those things you start to think about," Verlander said. "I've been there before, where I've lost them in the sixth, seventh, eighth, ninth. So I guess I've ? not become accustomed to it ? but you learn to just refocus and just get the next guy. That's all I can do."

This was much better than Verlander's outing at Texas on May 16, when he allowed eight runs and didn't get out of the third inning.

Verlander has been overshadowed a bit this year by fellow Detroit right-hander Max Scherzer, who is a strong candidate to start Tuesday night's All-Star game at Citi Field in New York. But Verlander showed Sunday why he, too, is an All-Star.

"I think he's been a very good major league pitcher that has expectations that are almost impossible to live up to," Detroit manager Jim Leyland said.

Verlander received a nice ovation from the home crowd after the first Texas hit, and another one when he came back to the dugout after retiring his final batter.

NOTES: Perez allowed five runs and four hits in 5 2-3 innings. He struck out four and walked three. ... Leyland said Anibal Sanchez will start Friday at Kansas City in the first game after the All-Star break, followed by Verlander, Doug Fister, Scherzer and Rick Porcello.

Fully assembled low-cost iPhone on sale in China!

low cost iphone leaked china 5

We have seen the rear cases, and some of the components of the low-cost iPhone, but this is the first fully built new iPhone we have seen and it is on sale in China now!

While browsing Chinese E-commerce site Taobao for traces of the purported low-cost iPhone we came across more than a few listings for a fully assembled low-cost iPhone which can be bought right now!

Like the leaked photos this low-cost iPhone appears to have plastic rear shell and looks to have a 4-inch display like the current iPhone 5.

low cost iphone leaked china 4 Fully assembled low cost iPhone on sale in China!

The rear of the low-cost iPhone shows us a black printed Apple logo on the glossy white body. And we can see that the placement of the rear camera and LED flash remain unchanged!

Looking around the rest of the low-cost iPhone we can see that Apple are still using a Sim Tray, and that the base of the phone is still the chosen location for the 3.5mm headphone jack, speakers and Lightning cable.

As the name suggests this iPhone is very affordable with listings of the white model (black is also available) starting at just 300 Yuan ($48)! So what?s the catch? Well like the iPad mini we discovered on sale last year ahead of launch, this low-cost iPhone is actually a display dummy meant for retail stores to use, not an actual functioning device!

So is this really the low-cost iPhone? We believe it is!
