Although majorities of nearly every other age cohort also perceive a political bias, they are less likely than the college-age cohort.

Interestingly the more education respondents? attain, the less likely they are to report political bias in public classrooms. It?s unclear whether this is a result of greater experience at public universities, or individuals? conforming their values to their environment. For instance, among those with post-graduate degrees, 59 percent are Democratic or lead Democratic compared to 37 percent who are Republican or lean Republican.

Perceptions of political bias at California?s public campuses also vary by respondents? own political beliefs. For instance, a plurality (43 percent) of self identified liberals do not believe there is political bias in CA university classrooms, but 82 percent of self identified conservatives think there is bias. Eighty-two percent of Republicans and 54 percent of Independents agree, compared to 37 percent of Democrats.

Majorities of Caucasian, African-American, and Latino respondents all perceive political bias, but the kind of bias they detect varies widely. Among African-Americans, 19 percent perceive a liberal bias, 23 percent find a conservative bias, and 54 percent detect some other kind of bias. However, 47 percent of Latinos find a liberal bias, 14 percent see a conservative bias, and 33 percent perceive some other kind of bias. Caucasians are most likely to find a liberal bias (81 percent), while 6 percent find a conservative bias, and 10 percent say some other kind of bias.

Apple CEO Tim Cook says some Macs to be produced in U.S.

In a move that could ease criticism that Apple (AAPL) has offshored tens of thousands of manufacturing jobs to Asia, the Cupertino company will start producing one of its Mac computer lines somewhere in the United States starting next year, CEO Tim Cook said in a pair of rare interviews made public Thursday.

Apple won't manufacture the computers itself, but will contract with other companies and invest $100 million in the effort, Cook said.

"We've been working on this for a long time, and we were getting closer to it," he told Bloomberg Businessweek. "We could have quickly maybe done just assembly, but it's broader because we wanted to do something more substantial."

But the planned investment represents a tiny fraction of Apple's $100 billion in cash and investments, and last year alone it spent more than $8 billion on property, facilities and equipment. Meanwhile, Intel (INTC) and other electronics manufacturers often spend billions of dollars when they open new factories.

Michael Palma, a research manager who studies electronics manufacturing services for technology consulting firm IDC, said a $100

million investment is "going to sound really good," but is more of a "public relations initiative" than a meaningful shift in Apple's business model or a meaningful contribution to the U.S. economy.

"The reality is that it's probably not going lead to significant employment jumps, and it's not going to impact their business or their investments," Palma said.

Cook did not say which Mac computers would be made in the United States, where they would be made or which contractor Apple would use. A spokesman for Apple declined to provide any details, but Bloomberg reported Thursday that a spokesman for Foxconn, the Taiwan-based manufacturing company that makes many of Apple's products in China, plans to expand its operations in North America because of customer demand. The Foxconn spokesman did not specify which customers were seeking such moves.

Some of Apple's newest iMac desktop computers already carry a stamp saying they are assembled in the United States. Cook did not discuss how the current manufacturing efforts differ from Apple's plans.

unemployment in the United States and embarrassing disclosures about working conditions in Foxconn's factories, Apple, now the most valuable company in the world, faces mounting pressure to resume manufacturing its products in the United States.

Cook said in a separate interview aired Thursday by NBC that Apple and other companies chose to make their products overseas not because of lower costs but because of a shortage of manufacturing skills in the United States.

He added that consumer electronics has never really had a big production presence in the United States and that the issue is more about starting production in the United States than bringing it back.

But Apple originally made its computers in California. It began outsourcing production in the mid-'90s, first by selling some plants to contract manufacturers, then by hiring manufacturers overseas. It assembled iMacs in Elk Grove until 2004.

Howard Wial, director of the Center for Urban Economic Development at the University of Illinois-Chicago, said Thursday that the skill level of production workers isn't a big barrier to bringing manufacturing jobs back to the United States.

"There are plenty of workers that still have manufacturing skills here," he said, adding that any declines in skill levels are due to ''the huge losses of manufacturing jobs that we suffered, particularly between 2000 and 2010."

By any measure, Cook's announcement represents a relatively small step toward resuming American manufacturing for the company. Its Mac line has become decreasingly important to Apple, which in its last fiscal year drew more than 70 percent of its revenue from sales of iPhones and iPads. Less than 15 percent of its revenues came from Mac sales.

The two interviews covered a wide range of topics. Cook reiterated Apple's "intense interest" in television, but declined to discuss any future products. And he dismissed the iPad's competitors as "confusing" products.

Cook also discussed the problems with Apple's new Maps application, which debuted with Apple's iPhone 5 and has been lambasted for mislabeling and misplacing many points of interest.

"We set out to give the customer something to provide a better experience. And the truth is, it didn't live up to our expectations. We screwed up," he said.

Although asked, Cook declined to say much in either interview about Apple's recent management shake-up, including the departure of Scott Forstall, who had previously overseen the iPhone's software. Forstall was reportedly fired because he refused to sign on to Cook's apology for the Maps app.

Cook said the recent management changes were intended to encourage better "collaboration" at Apple.

On a more personal level, Cook described himself as a "private person." And he said the death last year of his former boss, Apple cofounder Steve Jobs, was the "saddest time" in his life.

Cook said he didn't realize the dire state of Jobs' health until right before he died. "I always thought he would bounce back, because he always did," he said.

The city that was the scene of some of the worst warfare during the Balkans wars has unexpectedly become a safe haven ? for stray dogs facing death elsewhere in the country.

Bosnia passed a law nearly four years ago banning the killing of strays, alarmed at a sharp rise in canine slaughter as wild dogs proliferated on Bosnian streets. But people ignored the law, largely because authorities failed to provide alternatives such as sterilization.

Animal rights activists such as Turalic believe the government should have trained vets to neuter the animals and built shelters so they could be adopted or released to live out their lives without reproducing.

Since March, Sarajevo has become the only city in Bosnia where the law is respected ? thanks to a new city-funded dog shelter run by Turalic that performs sterilizations.

It means that people around the country have taken to collecting strays and dumping them on the streets of Sarajevo, confident that Turalic and her team of animal lovers will pick them up and provide care.

"We have a perfect law," said Turalic. The problem, she said is that, "the law was adopted almost overnight without anybody providing the conditions for its implementation."

Since the country remains deeply divided along ethnic lines, different parts of Bosnia deal with the problem of strays in different ways. That's because the 1992-95 war between Bosnia's three groups ? Bosniaks, Serbs and Croats ? ended with a peace agreement that divided Bosnia into two semi-autonomous regions, linked by a weak central government.

It's an arrangement that allows some local governments to pass their own dog-killing laws that contradict the nationwide ban.

"Dogs and also cats are treated as communal waste here," said Bogdana Mijic, from the animal protection group Noa, based in Banja Luka, the administrative capital of the nation's Bosnian Serb region.

In Sarajevo, where animal activists are the loudest, it took Turalic's teams three months to get the problem of strays under control last summer with the shelter and sterilizations.

"But then we started noticing 'new faces' on the streets daily and people started telling us about overnight deliveries," she said.

It has turned Sarajevo into a stray dog haven. "Let them come," Turalic said. "People do this with best intentions."

Use the "Embarrassment Test" to Help Make Difficult Decisions

Nobody likes making a difficult decision, but if you're really struggling between choices, blogger Eric Koester suggests using what he calls the "embarrassment test" to help guide you along the right path.

The idea is to imagine the conversation you'd have defending your decision, and then thinking about if you'd be embarrassed defending it. Koester explains:

I like to use the Embarrassment Test. When you are making a decision that is a toughie or just could go either way, I think the best course of action is to gather up all the facts and rationales for your decision, and imagine a conversation with someone you trust... In that imaginary conversation, dump that pile of information onto your confidant and then ask yourself the following question:

"Would I be embarrassed to offer them this rationale for my decision?"

When you do this, you're effectively testing your gut. You might realize you're more confident in your decision than you thought, or you might find that you need to do more research because your rationale doesn't hold up.

Cops: Suspect in Ark. girl's death a family friend

BENTONVILLE, Ark. (AP) ? Officials say the man arrested as a suspect in the killing of a 6-year-old Arkansas girl was a family friend.

Bentonville Police Chief Jon Simpson on Tuesday described 28-year-old Zachary Holly as "an acquaintance."

Simpson told The Associated Press that Holly and his wife lived next door to where Jersey Bridgeman was staying.

Jersey was reported missing the morning of Nov. 20. Minutes after a search began, her body was discovered in an abandoned house two doors from her home. A high-profile child abuse case last year sent Jersey's father and stepmother to prison.

Holly is charged with capital murder, kidnapping and residential burglary.

Simpson said Holly and his wife do not have children, but Holly's wife has a child who is "pretty much the same age as our victim."

Homo (Sans) Sapiens: Is Dumb and Dumber Our Evolutionary Destiny?

James R. Flynn?s observation that IQ scores experienced dramatic gains from generation to generation throughout the 20th century has been cited so often, even in popular media, that it is becoming a cocktail party talking point. Next stop a New Yorker cartoon. (An article about Flynn and the Flynn effect has already been published in The New Yorker.)

A recent report in Trends in Genetics (part 1 and part 2) takes a bleaker view of our cognitive future?one that foresees the trend line proceeding inexorably downward. Gerald Crabtree, a biologist at Stanford University, has put forward a provocative hypothesis that our cushy modern existence?absent the ceaseless pressures of natural selection experienced during the Paleolithic?makes us susceptible to the slow creep of random genetic mutations in the the 2000 to 5000 genes needed to ensure that our intellectual and emotional makeup remains intact. The implications of this argument are that we as a species of the genus Homo are over many generations slowly losing our sapiens.

The press justifiably had a field day with this one:

The really clever part of Crabtree?s argument rests on the contention that a Stone Age Fred Flintstone may have been more of a dynamo in some ways than a 20th century Albert Einstein?our pre-historic forebears performed? the evolutionary heavy lifting that led to the swollen heads that we still avail ourselves of, at least until the inevitable decline predicted by Crabtree sets in.

Expansion of the human frontal cortex and endocranial volume, to which we likely owe our capacity for abstract thought, predominately occurred between 50 000 and 500,000 years ago in our prehistoric African ancestors, well before written language and before we had the modern voice-box to produce sophisticated verbal language, but after the first tools. Thus, the selective pressures that gave us our mental characteristics operated among nonverbal hunter-gatherers living in dispersed bands or villages, nothing like our present-day high-density, supportive societies.

In line with Crabtree?s take, the transition to survival through wiles?in place of speed and physical strength?required adaptations that appeared to rival or outpace the most lofty contemporary intellectual achievements like writing a symphony or cogitating on higher math. One small error in gauging the aerodynamics and gyroscopic stabilization of a spear and one of our would-be ancestors became a canape for a saber-tooth tiger.

Many kinds of modern refined intellectual activity (by which our children are judged) may not necessarily require more innovation, synthesis, or creativity than more ancient forms: inventing the bow-and-arrow, which seems to have occurred only once about 40,000 years ago, was probably as complex an intellectual task as inventing language. Selection could easily have operated on common (but computationally complex) tasks such as building a shelter, and then computationally simple tasks, such as playing chess, became possible as a collateral effect.

Flintstone vs. Einstein smarts are contrasted most starkly by considering the case of artificial intelligence. AI has achieved major strides in emulating certain aspects of intellect: playing chess or Jeopardy and finding patterns in large collections of data, a field dubbed ?deep learning.? But the remaining and still immense challenges AI confronts lie elsewhere, as Crabtree points out:

AI promised household robots that would wash dishes, mow the lawn, and bring us freshly cooked croissants and coffee in the morning. Needless to say we do not have these robots now and none of the readers of this piece will probably ever see them, despite the immense financial impetus to build them.

The things at which AI excels?playing chess, Jeopardy or keeping an airplane on course?are, in fact, a cognitive piece of cake compared to washing dishes and putting them away in the right place. I remember roboticist Rodney Brooks demonstrating this during a talk at MIT in which he simply put his hand in his pocket and pulled out some change, an extraordinarily tough task for the current generation of R2-D2s.

Without the rigors of strong selection in our extended urban conglomerates?no more necessity of getting it right the first time on that spear throw?the slow but relentless decline of those 2,000 to 5,000 cognition-related genes has already begun?as this argument goes. Crabtree begins the first part of? his essay by asserting that the average citizen from Athens circa 1,000 B.C.?or anyone from Africa, India, Asia or the Americas millenia back?would be among the ?brightest and most intellectually alive of our colleagues and companions, with a good memory, a broad range of ideas, and a clear-sighted view of important issues??personal qualities supplemented by an astonishing emotional aplomb. This hyper-fit type would have prevailed even before the rise of civilization:

A hunter?gatherer who did not correctly conceive a solution to providing food or shelter probably died, along with his/her progeny, whereas a modern Wall Street executive that made a similar conceptual mistake would receive a substantial bonus and be a more attractive mate. Clearly, extreme selection is a thing of the past.

Maybe this explains our fascination with post-apocalyptic Mad Max-style fantasies?? But where?s the proof for Crabtree?s musings and what about contradictory evidence?? Crabtree proposes a test of his hypothesis and he also dismisses the Flynn effect that suggests that we have been getting progressively smarter generation after generation. Better IQ scores, Crabtree posits, are not a result of natural selection, but rather may have resulted from getting rid of lead and other heavy metals from gasoline and paint, from elimination of hypothyroidism by putting iodine in salt and from learning how to take tests better. Notwithstanding the Flynn effect, our slow genetic decline continues apace.

And what does the author of the Flynn effect? think about the Crabtree effect?

Crabtree suggests?that our genetic IQ is in?decline and proposes a direct genetic test of his hypothesis. We should await the results without ?sharing his pessimism. ? As he says, the environment that pressures us to perform intellectually is competition with other people, which could be argued to be at its maximum today. He ?fears? it is not enough and that is not a solid foundation foundation for his speculations. ?A much more direct test of trends is reproductive patterns. ?Only recently have the better educated been out-reproduced by the less educated. ?One can imagine events that would reverse this, so it is premature to panic.

Meanwhile, noted British anthropologist and evolutionary psychologist Robin Dunbar questions the premises of any postulated slow slide toward imbecility:

Crabtree?s argument is built on the assumption that the selection pressure for big brains (aka IQ) was solving instrumental problems (how to survive in the world by building better weapons, better tools, etc). In fact, the selection for larger brains across all mammals and birds (and specifically primates) is the complexities of the social world, and this remains at least as complex as it ever was ? in fact, the social world may have even become more complex than it ever was due to a combination of higher population density and urbanization. The ability to build clever tools or novel hunting techniques appears to be a by-product of the [neural] software needed to handle a complex world (they both use the same logic and cognitive processes). So we haven?t in fact lost the selection process that kept the pressure on.

The question, as often happens in evolutionary biology, is how to distinguish assertions like Crabtree?s from a Rudyard Kipling ?just so? story. Crabtree has thought of a test that would sequence whole genomes of carefully selected individuals?ones whose genes could be traced back through an involved analysis to ancestors who lived at different times during the past 5,000 years when the transition from hunter-gatherer lifestyle to agriculture was taking place. The test would look for an increase in mutations for those individuals with genes linked to ancestors who lived more recently along the 5000-year continuum, a confirmation of the gradual decline in intellectual ability.

Finding these people might require more than posting notices on Twitter and Facebook and Crabtree?s? proposal is probably not going to get pegged high on the NIH?s funding priorities for the 2014 federal fiscal year. But the Stanford professor still does not despair. He ends this entropic projection of our evolutionary future on an optimistic and self-deprecatory note. Science, he says, may yet find a way to counteract this trend. ?One does not need to imagine a day when we could no longer comprehend the problem, or counteract the slow decay in the genes underlying our intellectual fitness, or have visions of the world population docilely watching reruns on televisions they can no longer build.?

We may still have a few hundred years before we lose the modifier denoting ?intelligent? in Homo sapiens and science may yet find a way to save us ?by socially and morally acceptable means. In the meantime [Crabtree volunteers], I?m going to have another beer and watch my favorite rerun of Miami CSI (if I can figure out how to work the remote control).?

Sarah Pappalardo: The Sincere Mustache and the Authenticity Aesthetic

A new caf? opened next door to me that seemed to have dropped from space, built from an alien's notes about the tastes of the so-called 'creative class'. Every bartender had the same handlebar mustache. Tchotchkes vaguely reminiscent of the late 19th century and framed Victorian silhouettes were scattered along the wall. None of this was particularly unusual for Brooklyn, but the consistency and uniformity of it all seemed strange. "That's because this place isn't real," my friend said. As if it were a theme park restaurant whose theme we've begun to build our lives around - an intense commitment to this particular performance.

Something changed when young people traded their sneakers for leather oxfords, old jeans for pleated slacks, and neon hoodies for navy-blue blazers.

When century-old brands redesigned their websites to look old-timey.

When everyone became obsessed with the-perfect-fucking-cocktail.

When people conspicuously displayed their love for the feel of a real book in your hands, man.

There may have been a point when the resurgence of boat shoes and typewriters were an ironic nod to the past, but something happens when you do something enough: before you know it, you sincerely enjoy what you are doing. YOLO!

Christy Wampole's NYT piece How to Live without Irony is adorable in her seven-years-too-late assessment of the Youth of Today, claiming the eponymous hipster is lost in the throes of irony, as if it's still 2006 and we're all wearing ironic vintage tees. If people are still as addicted to irony as she says we are, then we must have an incredible commitment to the joke. The trends she chose to ignore - dudes brewing kombucha in their basement, chicks with chicken coops on apartment roofs, couples pickling beets in their studio, militant home-brewers galore - are perfectly sincere in their pursuits. Irony isn't dead, but it's not an all-encompassing hipster worldview; sometimes pickles just taste good.

That said, the resurgence of butter churning, darning reclaimed socks, mustache wax and writing on paper does come with its own set of problems: the self-proclaimed 'writer' who, instead of writing, posts an Instagram of their $45 Moleskine notebook and fountain pen upon a reclaimed wooden table. The bar staff that all wears suspenders, in spite of having no uniform. The marginally employed 23-year-old who throws "underground society" parties for other 23-year-olds, and has its own hashtag on Instagram.

Unlike the people who first used the simple objects that people now covet, we are, ironically, using the digital media in order to share their 'simplicity' with the world. Authenticity isn't the goal, if you define authenticity as living a life that reflects your values. The aesthetic of authenticity, of some far-off time when people had a meaningful connection to the objects they used, is now the name of the game. Is that so bad?

Cut back to ten years ago when the working-class aesthetic was co-opted and worn ironically by wealthy, mostly white young people. Trucker hats and a sketchy-looking mustache mocked conventional ideals of style. There was a rejection of excess and sincerity and an embrace of cynicism, irony, and thrift. That VICE brand of ironic living began to fade as people got older and found something new to fetishize: old, difficult objects - even if an easier, cheaper tool would get the same results. But the cultural capital in hipster's setting of the trend never lost its value. It's as if the distaste for common digital paraphernalia has manifested into an intense love for its exact analog opposite. It seems that people haven't grown pretentious about the things they do as much as they've found joy in the pretension itself - as evidenced by the overt use and display of typewriters.

There was cultural capital to be found in abiding by the hipster aesthetic: young, broke liberal arts majors offered little to the world except for their taste in clothes and music. Tastes evolved, young people used their cultural capital to gain real capital, and their look became mainstream. Now, your outfit may suggest irony (LOL I'm wearing my dad's stuffy old yacht club blazer to the yacht club, HOW IRONIC!) but the Invisible Hand tied those Bourgeois boat shoes! Those pleats are so ironic that they became authentic all over again! At some point, your ironic mustache became sincere. Like the hippie parents who ended up voting for Reagan, we may have come full circle: from mocking the bourgeoisie to being it.

There was more to the turn-of-the-century lifestyle than pastoral images, folk music and farm-to-table dining after all; it was also the heyday of the capitalist bourgeoisie. Bourgeois life revolved around conspicuous consumption and conspicuous leisure - not much different from now, except that they managed to do it all without Instagram. Today, our penchant for irony wears away with every picture of brunch that we amass.

I think I want my irony back.

Congo M23 rebel leader heads to Kampala for talks:M23 spokesman

KAMPALA (Reuters) - The leader of the Democratic Republic of Congo's M23 rebel group Colonel Sultani Makenga is travelling to the Ugandan capital Kampala for talks at the invitation of the head of the Ugandan military, a rebel spokesman said on Monday.

Congolese President Joseph Kabila met M23 for the first time at the weekend after a summit in Uganda where regional leaders gave the rebels two days to leave the eastern Congo city of Goma, which the rebels seized last week after U.N.-backed government troops melted away.

Congo said it would not negotiate with the rebels until they pulled out of Goma, but the rebels said the government was in no position to set conditions on peace talks.

"Makenga's on his way to Kampala, he has been invited by the military chief of Uganda," rebel spokesman Amani Kabasha told Reuters by phone from an undisclosed location.

The Ugandan military said it could not immediately confirm Makenga's visit but that it was probable since Uganda's chief of defense forces, Aronda Nyakayirima, was apparently coordinating M23's withdrawal.

"I am not aware of his arrival but I wouldn't be surprised if he were here because meetings have been going on and since Aronda has been tasked to coordinate the withdrawal (from Goma) he would need to talk to him (Makenga)," military spokesman Felix Kulayigye said.

A diplomat said the African Union was due to hold a Peace and Security Council meeting later on Monday to discuss the crisis.

Nadine Cherry's life was changed forever at 22 when, during a horse ride on a windy day, she hit a fence post, became dizzy and fell to the ground.

Cherry hit her head and emerged three weeks later from a coma.

In April, she will mark 36 years as the survivor of a traumatic brain injury.

Cherry is a member of the Rowan Brain Injury Support Group, a program of the Arc of Rowan. The program began operating under the Arc in 2009. The Arc is a nonprofit organization that supports people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

The organization began 58 years ago as a place for families of children with developmental disabilities who had no options for help and needed an advocate.

Today, the organization administers more than a dozen programs.

"The Arc of Rowan is about advocacy making the possibilities happen," Executive Director Jane Jackman said.

Robert Ritchie, president of the agency's board of directors, said advocacy "is No. 1. We help them get the help that's there."

The Arc also establishes new programs to fill voids in what's offered to help people with developmental and intellectual disabilities.

"It's about the people. It's about respect," Jackman said.

Cherry is one of the organization's most supportive volunteers, Jackman said. Jackman said if she has a project and needs a volunteer to help, she calls and Cherry answers.

The Summit Civitan Club is an Arc program where people with disabilities provide services to others. The Civitan members wanted to establish their own programs and now operate nearly a dozen civic projects. Civitan members collect used and old towels for Faithful Friends Animal Sanctuary, collect magazines for nursing home residents for the organization's Adopt-A-Grandparent project and save pop tops for the Ronald McDonald House for recycling.

One of the newest items the organization uses as a teaching tool is a set of puppets called Kids on the Block. Michael, the most popular puppet, has a twin who is disabled, goes to Arc events and even has a blog. There are 21 puppets, and many of them have disabilities.

"It's a great way to tell about what the Arc does," Jackman said.

Coming up is the Arc's annual Festival of Trees. The event is from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Nov. 30, 11 a.m.-8 p.m. on Dec. 1 and 1 p.m.-5 p.m. on Dec. 2 at the F&M Trolley Barn, 127 E. Liberty St. Admission is free.

Lee Street Theatre

The theater is touted as Salisbury's off-Broadway and fringe theater and is in the midst of its fifth season. The theater provides an opportunity for alternative performance art within the Rowan community. There is an 11-member board and one staff, Managing Artistic Director, Justin Dionne.

There have been all types of prodcutions including variety shows, improvisational, original 10-minute plays with all performances at the Looking Glass Artists Center's black box theatre.

Since the summer, the theater has been undergoing its capital campaign for a new performing arts center. The theater is buying a warehouse at the corner of North Lee and Kerr Streets.

A complete wish list is below.With the giving season upon us, some people may be considering charitable donations.

Here's the 2012 Sharing the Season list compiled by the Post of local nonprofits, human service agencies, schools and their needs.

The list is not complete. The community has countless more churches and charitable organizations. But these are most of the major groups in Rowan County.

Community Care Clinic

Purpose: A nonprofit organization that provides free medical care, dental care and prescription medications to low-income uninsured residents of Rowan County.

Needs: Monetary donations to provide medical, dental and prescription assistance to uninsured adult residents of Rowan County. We need medical and dental providers and pharmacists to volunteer at the clinic Monday-Friday and every other Tuesday night. Support personnel for office related duties are needed at anytime. Rowan Blues and Jazz Society

The average number of families served for Food and Nutrition Services has risen from 24,304 individual recipients in fiscal year 2011, to nearly 26,540 individuals in 2012. While waiting for Food and Nutrition Services benefits, people may run out of food. DSS keeps a small food pantry at the main office to give the family a bag of groceries to help them until their benefits are approved.

Salisbury-Rowan Symphony Society, Inc.

Purpose: Annually presents four performances of the Salisbury Symphony and one of the North Carolina Symphony, two performances of the Nutcracker, and one of the Pops at the Post with funds raised by a separate board. Also provides teachers for after-school string program and annual orchestra concert for all fifth-graders and string trio/quartet concert for younger students in all schools.

Needs: in order of priority

At Catawba: New orchestra shell, pit renovation to original plans (requiring new storage area for Theater Department)

At Livingstone: Stage enlargement or reworking of entire performance space, new seats and other comfort improvements to audience area

Equipment needed for all concerts: New musicians' chairs, additional music stands

In the community: Orchestra program in all middle and high schools, more support for music and all the arts in our school system.

The Salvation Army

Needs: Angel Tree gifts for 1,200 children - clothing sizes and wish list are included on Angel Trees at several banks and retail stores

Also: Volunteers needed the week of Dec. 17 to help prepare packages for distribution.

Trinity Living Center

Purpose: Enables frail older adults and adults with disabilities to remain at home and in the community through the use of supportive services.

Needs: Volunteers to assist with activities, provide extra hands, work in our flower beds and help with small group and individual time. Household supplies (Clorox wipes, hand sanitizer, tissues), office supplies (copy paper, legal pads, manila folders, sticky notes, postage stamps), bingo prizes (socks, lipstick, costume jewelry, dollar store items, handkerchiefs, scarves, lotion, nail polish, remover, emery boards, cotton balls), non-stick Telfa pads (over-the-counter), wound cleanser (over-the-counter) and health care items (Band-Aids, antibiotic ointment).

United Way

Purpose: Raises funds for human services, helps sponsor local agencies (including many listed here), plans for community-based needs.

Needs: Donations of equipment and supplies to Matchmaker program that matches items with agencies that need them. Call United Way to learn where to donate goods. Donations are welcome.

WaterWorks Visual Art Center

Purpose: The Center is among Salisbury's most valued cultural organizations dedicated to providing exciting, enriching, and diverse opportunities in the arts for adults and children through exhibitions, education, and outreach programs. In addition to rotating, professional exhibits of contemporary art, it also offers studio classes in drawing, painting, photography, sculpture, and pottery, and outreach programs. We invite you to join us in creative exploration!

Needs: Video camera for online podcasts of artists, workshops, and exhibitions, gift cards from Dick Blick art supplies or Walmart, laser cutter, Fund-A-Need (scholarships for classes, art supplies), volunteers (clerical tasks, docents, studio assistants), volunteer librarian, members, donors, and sponsors (for exhibitions and fundraisers).
