Students Have Taken Over Florida Governor?s Office Demanding Justice For Trayvon

Students from around Florida have converged at the state capitol in Tallahassee demanding that Gov. Rick Scott heed their demands concerning racial profiling and school-to-prison pipeline issues in the wake of the George Zimmerman verdict. The youth ? mostly Latino and African Americans ? call themselves the ?Dream Defenders? and have occupied the building since Tuesday making pleas to speak with the governor. Leaders of the Defenders say Gov. Scott has so far refused to meet with them so they plan to stay overnight, through the weekend if necessary, until the governor responds.?

The Dream Defenders have been organizing around the killing of Trayvon Martin since the murder happened last spring. Today, hundreds of students, some as young as nine years old, are gathered to convince state lawmakers to pass the ?Trayvon Martin Act.? The bill would address racial profiling, ?Stand Your Ground? laws and school-to-prison pipeline issues ? ?the three pillars that led to George Zimmerman getting away with killing Trayvon Martin,? said Dream Defender Philip Agnew on a media call.?

Despite the governor?s rebuff of their request to meet with him, Agnew said, ?We?re not going anywhere. The State House Legislative building is a great place to live,? and joked that he even has some change-of-address forms.?

According to Dream Defender Ciara Taylor, the number of students occupying the building have ?doubled? since they started Tuesday. Annie Thomas, of the Miami-based Power U Center for Social Change, said students there are ?living in a state of fear? due to schools? ?zero tolerance? policies that lead to students of color getting excessively suspended and expelled. Trayvon Martin lived and went to school in Miami Gardens and was in Sanford the day he was murdered because he was serving a ten-day suspension from school.?

The Defenders? occupy action has earned the support of civil rights groups like the NAACP, which is holding its national convention not far away in Orlando. The NAACP?s state chapter excused one of its directors, Dale Landry, so he could travel to Tallahassee and support the Defenders. Landry delivered a letter from the Florida NAACP president that told Gov. Scott to listen to the concerns of the organized youth.?

?Parents across the state are questioning whether Stand Your Ground laws protect their children from vigilantism and racial profiling,? said Landry. ?

Landry also said that by Gov. Scott?s refusing to meet with the Defenders, ?he is affirming the sentiment that the state places no value on the lives of black and brown youth.?

UPDATE 9:02 EST 07/18/13: Communications staff from the Advancement Project just reported to me that Gov. Rick Scott has agreed to meet with the Dream Defenders and he is in a session with them right now that began with a prayer circle. I?m told the students are telling him they do not plan to leave the state capitol until their demands concerning the Trayvon Martin Act are met. More news to come soon.

U.S. regulators charge city of Miami with fraud

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Securities and Exchange Commission charged the city of Miami and its former budget director with fraud on Friday for allegedly making misleading statements and omissions in bond documents in order to mask general fund deficits.

The regulatory agency said it was seeking injunctive relief and financial penalties from the city as well as from former budget director Michael Boudreaux.

Noting that the city was already under a cease-and-desist order for similar misconduct in 2003, the regulators said in a written statement that starting in 2008 Boudreaux had moved money among city funds to disguise financial weaknesses from investors looking at three 2009 bond deals worth $153.5 million.

"Miami actively marketed bonds to the investing public, while hiding the true reason for interfund transfers to boost the image of its primary operating fund," said George Canellos, co-director of the SEC's Division of Enforcement.

Nearly a year ago, lawyers for Miami offered to shake up its financial staff as part of a proposal to settle the looming civil securities-fraud charges.

If you know Chicago, you know it loves its hot dogs (pickle spear, no ketchup!). Balkan brass

Brasslands is an award-winning documentary film and CD soundtrack about a yearly trumpet competition that, with its more than a half-million fans, takes over Gu?a, a tiny Serbian village. The film is in limited release in the United States (check www.brasslands.com), but the raucous CD that is a celebration of the human spirit amid adversity is available through Evergreene Music.

Dance masters

The documentary Dancing at Jacob?s Pillow: Never Stand Still is a love letter about an iconic institution and dance ? ballet, modern, and jazz. Nestled deep in the Massachusetts Berkshires, Jacob?s Pillow was founded in the 1930s by modern-dance pioneer Ted Shawn. With interviews of such masters as Merce Cunningham, Mark Morris, Judith Jamison, and Suzanne Farrell, as well as a slew of up-and-coming talent, this award-winning film is an encyclopedia of American dance. It airs on PBS?s ?Great Performances? July 26.

Mob mentality

This seems to be the summer of the mob, with the James ?Whitey? Bulger trial under way in Boston and HBO offering old episodes of The Sopranos. National Geographic Channel connects all the dots with its comprehensive-if-chilling Inside the American Mob, premi?ring July 28 at 9 p.m. It?s a history lesson on the modern Mafia, told by FBI agents, informants, and police who helped take down La Cosa Nostra. Each hour examines a pivotal time frame, beginning with 1970 and leading up to the present.

Desktop coffee shop

It?s a website (soon to be an app) with a premise so simple that we were skeptical: The ambient sounds of a cafe provide a measure of white noise that may actually ease the creative process. Coffitivity (coffitivity.com) delivers to your desktop a low-level clink-and-chatter audio track that?s seamlessly looped ? and rather relaxing. Other sites provide other ambient sounds. But we?ll take this one, with a decaf latte, and save the trouble of finding a spot at Starbucks.

A career on 88 keys

To celebrate Leon Fleisher?s 85th birthday, Columbia/Epic and Sony Classical are releasing a 23-CD deluxe box set spanning this great American pianist?s 55-year career. Two discs capture Fleisher at the peak of his reemergence after his right hand was disabled in 1965, plus a third disc of ?Piano Concertos for the Left Hand? with the Boston Symphony Orchestra. The last disc of three Mozart piano concertos was released in 2009, his first two-hand concerto recording in more than 40 years.

Review: 'The Fosters' and the Complexities of TV, Child Welfare ...

Posted by .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) on Thursday, July 18, 2013

image
A show debuting this summer on ABC, The Fosters, details the lives of a lesbian couple raising a household that includes foster children.

I had high hopes for the new ABC Family cable show The Fosters when I saw the first promo. Produced by Jennifer Lopez, the new summer series highlights a new ?non-traditional? family with foster children, and I was anxious to see how a foster family and the child welfare system would be portrayed on TV.

As CEO of Bill Wilson Center, I oversee a foster family agency that certifies foster parents and places children in these homes. Recruiting, screening, training and certifying foster parents is not an easy process. Add to this task the high cost of housing in Silicon Valley, and it becomes even more challenging. I hoped that a new television show portraying foster families in a positive way would be beneficial to foster children and prospective foster parents.

But, after watching a few episodes, and speaking with a couple of foster kids about it, I have mixed feelings about The Fosters. Based on the first two shows, my head was spinning trying to keep up with the various plots and drama. First, The Fosters refers to the family name in addition to the children they are raising. Second, the foster parents are a bi-racial lesbian couple raising a family made up of biological, adoptive and foster children. One parent is a police officer?who divorced her police partner husband and, along with her biological son, moved in with her new lesbian partner?and the other is a vice principal of a school that their four teenagers attend.

It seems too convenient that the other mom is vice principal at the kids? school, the role that is usually in charge of school discipline. You can expect plenty of drama from this mom dealing with her fosterlings as part of her job.

While my head may be spinning from the show?s many plot lines, for some conservative ?family-values? groups, the nontraditional lesbian parents are creating a firestorm of postings on the Internet. Personal reviews swing from a low of ?zero? to a perfect ?10,? as supporters and detractors face off trying to kill or save the show. It?s hard to find any reviews focusing on the foster-child theme.

To get a grounded perspective on the show, I spoke with a couple of foster youth after they had watched it. And?no surprise here?they love the show. One 16-year-old girl, who has been in foster care since age eight, said that one of her foster homes was headed by a lesbian couple, so that part of the show resonated with her.

Also, a storyline in the show about selling pills prescribed to treat ADHD at school was realistic to another foster youth. Although it is the show?s biological son who takes the medication, foster youth are more than twice as likely to be placed on medication for behavior than other youth.

There are some heart-tugging scenes with the foster children, but each episode is full of every possible issue that can come up in families?from substance abuse and stealing money to undocumented youth runaways, race issues, bullying, and on and on.

I guess it was too much to expect a Leave It To Beaver type television show featuring foster youth. I just hope The Fosters decide to let the two ?temporary? kids stay with them. If not, maybe Bill Wilson Center can find some new foster parents for them.

Sparky Harlan, Executive Director/CEO at Bill Wilson Center, is a nationally recognized advocate for youth in foster care and in the juvenile justice system, as well as homeless and runaway youth.

Paul Bhattacharjee was found dead at age 53.

Paul Bhattacharjee, who had roles in "Casino Royale" and "The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel," has been found dead at age 53. Bhattacharjee's body was found near the Splash Point cliffs in Seaford, East Sussex, England on July 12, the BBC reports.

Bhattacharjee had last been seen leaving rehearsal for the London play "Talk Show" on July 10. His death is not being treated as suspicious, although authorities would not reveal the cause of death.

The actor played a doctor in "Casino Royale," the 2006 film that introduced Daniel Craig as James Bond. He was also known in England for his theater work and his role on the British soap, "EastEnders."

Actress Parminder Nagra tweeted, "Very sad to hear the news about Paul Bhattacharjee. My thoughts are with his loved ones."

"We are deeply shocked and completely devastated at the loss of our dear friend and brilliant colleague Paul," said Vicky Featherstone, artistic director of London's Royal Court Theater, where "Talk Show" was being performed. "We can?t even begin to imagine the impact his loss will have on everyone who knew him and all of our thoughts are with his loved ones."

Before Bhattacharjee's body was found, his son, Rahul Bhattacharjee-Prashar, 24, told the London Evening Standard that the family was "worried sick." He called his father's disappearance "completely out of character," saying "He was doing well in his career and everything seemed to be going okay."

Paul Billington, theater critic for the London Guardian, wrote that "Bhattacharjee was one of those actors whose name on a programme gave you the reassuring sense that you were in safe hands."

Bhattacharjee is survived by his son and his mother.

New Office 365 subscriptions get 12 months of free Xbox Live Gold (but not in the US)

Office 365 subscription now includes 12 months of free Xbox Live Gold (but not in the US)

Sweetening the deal of its cloud-based Office 365 suite, Microsoft will start bundling a year of Xbox Live Gold with any purchases of Office 365 Home Premium or Office 365 University made before September 28. You'll then pick up an Xbox Live code as you sign in during the initial Office setup. Unfortunately, the US isn't included on the deal, but the majority of Europe, plus regions of Asia, as well as Australia and Canada are all involved. Alongside the recent promise of two free games a month, Microsoft's made this bundled subscription a pretty tempting proposition.
